From the ground up: Watching the AWS Builder Loft Berlin come to life

AWS Builder Loft Berlin opening night

I've been lucky enough to see a lot of things get built at AWS, but there's something different about standing inside a space while it's still coming together. This past week in Berlin, I got to watch the team put the final touches on the AWS Builder Loft Berlin — the furniture finding its place, the café taking shape, the little details that turn a room into a home for builders. And on Thursday, October 15, we opened the doors. Watching it all come together was genuinely amazing. You could feel what it was going to become before the first guest even walked in.
Located in Berlin-Mitte at Dircksenstraße 3, just steps from Alexanderplatz, the Loft is a free community and event space for developers, students, and startups. It's the second permanent Builder Loft in the world after San Francisco — with São Paulo and Hyderabad on the way later this year.

What's inside

A reception area, a 150-seat conference room, a café, and a coworking space — open five days a week and free of charge. The programming is built for hands-on building: compute and architecture deep dives, security workshops, coding sessions, generative AI explorations, and plenty of room for networking.
But the part I'm most excited about is what the community will do with it. This is a space made for hackathons that run late into the evening, meetups where the Berlin tech scene finds its people, demo nights, study groups, and workshops led by builders for builders. The room is deliberately flexible — a training space one morning, a demo stage that same evening, ready to become whatever the week's events call for.
More than anything, I'm hoping to see it used — booked out, buzzing, and full of people building things together. A space like this only becomes what it's meant to be when the community makes it their own, and I can't wait to watch that happen.

Opening night

Rick Suttles , Director of AWS Builder Center, opened the evening — and then the people who make this community what it is took the mic. The community talks came from local user group leaders:
AWS User Group Berlin Leaders
AWS Women's User Group Berlin Leaders
Hearing them talk about what this space means for Berlin's developer community — that's when it really hit me that all those final touches I watched go in this week were about to be put to work.
Closing out the evening was Iliyana Ilieva-Gulamerian , my co-worker and the driving force behind the opening. None of this comes together without her — the Loft is as much a reflection of her vision and hard work as anything, and it was the perfect note to end the night on.

Get involved

The best part of the Builder Loft is that it's shaped by the community itself. If you were there, or you want to be part of what comes next, here's how:
