At large-scale tech events, one common challenge stands out —
while thousands of attendees walk past booths, only a small percentage truly engage.
while thousands of attendees walk past booths, only a small percentage truly engage.
This raises an important question:
How can we transform passive footfall into active participation?
💡 The Idea
To address this, we focused on creating an experience rather than a demonstration.
Instead of showcasing cloud concepts through traditional demos, we built BuilderType — a lightweight, interactive typing challenge designed for instant participation.
The experience was intentionally simple:
- Participants type a given prompt within 45 seconds
- Performance is measured through speed and accuracy
- Results are displayed instantly
No onboarding or instructions were required.
Users could start interacting within seconds.

⚡ Rapid Development Approach
BuilderType was developed within a very short timeframe, with a clear emphasis on:
- Minimal friction user experience
- Real-time feedback
- High responsiveness
In high-traffic environments, even minor delays or complexity can reduce engagement.
Our goal was to eliminate that entirely.

🔍 Observations from Deployment
Once deployed at the AWS Experience Zone, the interaction pattern was notable:
- Engagement was entirely organic
- Participants were drawn by observing others
- Peer-driven competition emerged naturally
- Repeat participation increased over time
The experience evolved from an individual activity into a shared, social interaction.
📊 Impact
Over the course of the event:
- 2500+ participants engaged with BuilderType
- A significant number of users returned to improve their scores
- Group participation and friendly competition increased dwell time
- Overall booth engagement improved substantially
🧠 Key Learnings
1. Simplicity drives adoption

🔮 Future Enhancements
BuilderType has the potential to evolve into a scalable engagement platform. Planned improvements include:
- Leaderboards for competitive tracking
- Multiplayer interaction modes
- Analytics for event insights
- Reusability across community and campus events
☁️ Conclusion
BuilderType reinforced an important principle:
Meaningful engagement does not require complexity —
it requires clarity, accessibility, and thoughtful execution.
By focusing on user experience and rapid implementation, even a simple idea can create a significant impact at scale.
