Why shifting from security to cloud fundamentals feels like learning to build the house

A quick reflection on how moving from network analysis and defensive security to cloud architecture changes your engineering mindset completely.

Looking for a new job
Hey everyone! 👋
I wanted to share a quick thought I’ve been chewing on lately. As someone wrapping up a background in computer engineering and diving deep into offensive security and blue team concepts (network analysis, OSINT, and threat hunting), jumping straight into cloud infrastructure feels like a complete shift in perspective.
For a long time, my focus was entirely on how things break—looking for misconfigurations, tracing packets, and analyzing threat vectors. But moving over to study AWS and cloud architecture recently has flipped that script completely.
It turns out that trying to understand how to design resilient, secure, and properly segmented networks from scratch gives you a whole new appreciation for why systems are built the way they are. You spend so much time looking at vulnerabilities that shifting to the builder's mindset—managing IAM roles, VPC subnets, and fault tolerance—feels like the missing puzzle piece.
Are you guys focusing purely on security, or are you mixing cloud architecture into your learning path too? Would love to hear how you balance both worlds. Let’s connect in the comments! 🚀
