You Probably Don't Need Kubernetes (Yet) 🚢

Kubernetes is powerful, but is it the right starting point for every project? Let's talk about choosing the right deployment tool instead of following the hype.

You Probably Don't Need Kubernetes (Yet) 🚢

Kubernetes is everywhere in DevOps discussions.
But here's an unpopular opinion: your first production deployment probably doesn't need Kubernetes.
Imagine you're building a small web application with a frontend, an API, and a database.
Do you really need a Kubernetes cluster, multiple deployments, ingress configuration, and all that operational complexity on day one?
Maybe not.
Depending on your needs, you could start with:
  • Amazon EC2 + Docker for straightforward server-based deployments.
  • Amazon ECS for managing containers without taking on Kubernetes' full operational model.
  • Amazon EKS when Kubernetes capabilities and its ecosystem justify the additional complexity.
The right choice depends on your team's experience, scaling requirements, reliability goals, and operational budget.
Remember: Kubernetes can solve real problems, but it also introduces problems you'll need to understand and manage.
My takeaway: Don't choose infrastructure because it looks impressive on your résumé. Choose it because your application actually needs it.
🔥 Your turn: If you were deploying your first production-ready API on AWS today, would you choose EC2, ECS, or EKS—and why?
