Stop Learning AWS Randomly: A 30-Day Roadmap for Complete Beginners

Learn AWS in a sensible order instead of jumping between services. This 30-day plan covers IAM, S3, EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and CloudWatch, with a project each week to make it stick.

With hundreds of AWS services to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. This 4-week plan gives you a clear order, from IAM and S3 to Lambda and DynamoDB, plus one small project each week so you build skills instead of just watching videos.
Trying to learn every AWS service at once is the fastest way to burn out. This roadmap avoids that by putting things in an order where each week builds on the one before. Plan on 1 to 2 hours a day.

Week 1: Secure your account and learn the basics

Goal: Set up your account safely and understand how AWS is laid out.
Learn
  • Regions, Availability Zones, and the shared responsibility model
  • IAM: users, groups, roles, and policies
Do
  • Enable MFA on the root user
  • Set up a budget alert
  • Create a restricted IAM user and sign in as that user
Watch out: Don’t use the root user for everyday tasks.

Week 2: Storage and compute

Goal: Store files and run your first server.
Learn
  • S3: buckets, objects, and the difference between public and private access
  • EC2: launching, connecting to, and shutting down a virtual server
Do
  • Host a simple static website on S3
  • Launch a small EC2 instance, connect to it, then terminate it
Watch out: A stopped EC2 instance still charges you for its attached storage, so delete anything you no longer need.

Week 3: Serverless and databases

Goal: Run code without managing servers, and save data.
Learn
  • Lambda: functions and event triggers
  • API Gateway: exposing a function through an HTTP endpoint
  • DynamoDB: tables, keys, and basic reads and writes
Do
  • Build a small API that stores and returns notes
Watch out: Keep permissions tight. Give your Lambda role only the access it actually needs.

Week 4: Combine everything and show your work

Goal: Turn what you’ve learned into something you can share.
Learn
  • CloudWatch: reading logs and tracking down errors
Do
  • Join your earlier pieces into one small project
  • Sketch the architecture
  • Delete every resource you created
  • Publish a short write-up of what you built and what went wrong
Watch out: Forgetting cleanup is the most common cause of surprise bills for beginners.

Habits that keep you on track

  1. Build instead of just watching. Finish every topic by making something.
  2. Clean up the same day. Delete resources as soon as a lab is done.
  3. Stick to official docs and free training. Check the current Free Tier terms for your account, because they change.
  4. Go deep before going wide. Finish one path before branching out.
