Think of an AWS Load Balancer as a highly efficient traffic cop standing outside a busy restaurant cluster. If everyone tries to crowd into the same single kitchen door, the kitchen crashes. The cop's job is to sit out front, look at who is arriving, and smoothly direct them to a kitchen that actually has open space.
The Three Main Flavors (And When to Use Them)
Instead of a confusing tech list, just think of them based on what they excel at:
- The Smart Cop (Application Load Balancer / ALB): This one actually reads your request. If a user is looking for video content (
://website.com), it sends them to the video servers. If they are looking to buy something (://website.com), it sends them to the payment servers. It’s perfect for normal websites and modern apps. - The Speed Demon (Network Load Balancer / NLB): This cop doesn't care what you are asking for; it only cares about sheer volume and speed. It can handle millions of people hitting it at the exact same split-second. It’s built for things like massive online multiplayer games or live stock-trading apps where a millisecond of lag ruins everything.
- The Security Guard (Gateway Load Balancer / GWLB): This one acts as a checkpoint. Before letting anyone near your app, it forces all traffic to walk through your virtual third-party firewalls and security scanners first to make sure nobody is carrying digital weapons.
