Simple Cloud, Smart Thinking: Do We Really Need More Services?

A reflection on why choosing fewer, suitable AWS services can sometimes be a smarter engineering decision than building a complicated cloud architecture.

Simple Cloud, Smart Thinking: Do We Really Need More Services? ☁️

When we explore AWS, it is easy to get excited about the number of services available. There are tools for computing, storage, databases, networking, automation, analytics, and much more.
Naturally, when we start designing a project, we may feel that using more services will make our solution more impressive.
But what if good cloud engineering is sometimes about choosing less?
Imagine a student building a personal portfolio website. The main goal is simple: display projects, share information, and help visitors get in touch.
Does this project need a complex architecture with many interconnected services from day one? Probably not.
A simpler solution using suitable services may be easier to understand, maintain, secure, and manage within a budget.
As the project grows, its requirements may change. More traffic, dynamic content, or new features might justify introducing additional services. The important thing is to make those decisions based on actual needs rather than complexity for its own sake.
This idea reminds me of an important engineering habit: understand the problem before choosing the tools.
Before adding a new AWS service, we can ask ourselves:
  • What problem will this service solve?
  • Can an existing component handle this requirement?
  • Will this make the project easier to maintain?
  • What additional security and cost considerations will it introduce?
These questions may seem simple, but they encourage us to think beyond just making an application work.
For students and beginners, this is an especially valuable lesson. We don't need to use every AWS service to demonstrate our skills. A small project with clear reasoning can teach us a lot more than a complicated project we cannot explain.
The goal isn't to build the biggest architecture. It is to build a solution that fits the problem.
And sometimes, the smartest technical decision is knowing what not to add.

Let's discuss!

Have you ever seen a project become unnecessarily complicated? What would you consider first when deciding whether to add another AWS service?
I'd love to learn how other builders approach this decision.
