Introduction

When building modern web applications, managing infrastructure, provisioning EC2 instances, and worrying about scaling or patching operating systems can quickly drain your momentum. As developers, our primary focus should be writing business logic and shipping features that deliver value to users.
That is where Serverless computing comes in.
In this article, we’ll walk through how to build a production-ready, fully scalable serverless CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) REST API on AWS using three core services:
  1. Amazon DynamoDB for fast, predictable, and scalable NoSQL data storage.
  2. AWS Lambda for running our backend logic without provisioning servers.
  3. Amazon API Gateway to safely expose our Lambda functions as HTTP endpoints.

Architecture Overview

Our application architecture is completely event-driven and serverless:
  • Client Request hits an Amazon API Gateway HTTP endpoint.
  • API Gateway triggers the corresponding AWS Lambda function written in Python (or Node.js).
  • Lambda executes the core application logic and interacts with an Amazon DynamoDB table to fetch or persist records.
  • Response flows securely back through API Gateway to the client.
Because all these services scale automatically and scale down to zero when idle, you only pay for the exact compute time you consume.
By combining API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB, you can build powerful, robust backends in hours instead of weeks—all while staying safely inside the AWS Free Tier for low-to-moderate traffic.
