Five Basic Cloud Security Practices I Learned While Learning AWS

Cloud security is an important part of application development. Here are five practical security concepts that beginners should understand when building applications on AWS.

Five Basic Cloud Security Practices I Learned While Learning AWS

When building applications in the cloud, writing working code is only one part of the process.
Security should be considered from the beginning.
Here are five basic security practices I learned while exploring AWS.

1. Use Least Privilege

Applications and users should receive only the permissions they actually need.
For example, an application that only reads data should not automatically receive permission to delete that data.
This reduces the potential impact of compromised credentials.

2. Protect Credentials

Credentials should not be hard-coded into source code.
For example, putting an access key directly inside a GitHub repository can create a serious security problem.
Credentials should be handled using appropriate AWS security mechanisms and secret-management approaches.

3. Encrypt Sensitive Data

Sensitive information should be protected both when stored and, where appropriate, when transmitted.
Encryption helps reduce the risk of exposing sensitive information.

4. Monitor Activity

Security does not end after deployment.
Cloud activity should be monitored so that unusual behavior can be investigated.
Logging and monitoring can help identify problems earlier.

5. Keep Access Controlled

Not every person in a development team needs access to every AWS resource.
Access should be separated based on responsibilities.
For example:
Developer → development resources
Administrator → administrative resources
Application → only required service permissions

Security Should Be Part of Development

Security should not be treated as something added only at the end of a project.
A better approach is to consider security during:
  • Design
  • Development
  • Testing
  • Deployment
  • Monitoring

Final Thoughts

Cloud security can initially seem complicated, but learning the fundamentals makes it easier to build safer applications.
Least privilege, credential protection, encryption, monitoring, and controlled access are useful concepts for anyone beginning their AWS journey.
