From Logs to Insights: Exploring AWS Logging and Monitoring
Learn how AWS logging and monitoring tools help track cloud activity, detect unusual behaviour, and improve security.
Understanding the Importance of Logging
Logging is the collection and recording of activity and event data within a system. In AWS, logs help track events, troubleshoot issues, investigate security incidents, and maintain records for auditing and regulatory compliance.
Common information found in log files includes the date and time of an event, its origin, and the identity of the resource accessed. These details help investigators understand what happened, who performed an action, and when it occurred.
What Is Monitoring?
Monitoring is the continuous process of observing and evaluating the security and performance of cloud resources. It helps identify unusual activities, performance issues, and potential security threats before they cause significant problems.
Amazon CloudTrail
AWS CloudTrail records actions performed by users, roles, and AWS services within an AWS environment. It provides information such as the identity of the caller, the action performed, and the date and time of the event.
These records are useful for security investigations, auditing account activity, troubleshooting operational issues, and supporting compliance requirements.
Amazon CloudWatch
Amazon CloudWatch helps monitor AWS resources and applications by collecting metrics, logs, and events. It provides visibility into resource performance and allows users to create alarms that notify them when specific thresholds or conditions are met.
CloudWatch can also help detect unusual behaviour and identify potential issues before they significantly affect an application.
VPC Flow Logs
Amazon VPC Flow Logs capture information about IP traffic flowing to and from network interfaces in a VPC. They help troubleshoot network connectivity issues, investigate suspicious traffic, and understand network activity.
This makes them useful for monitoring network access and identifying potential security concerns.
Other AWS Monitoring Tools
AWS also provides services such as Amazon EventBridge and AWS X-Ray. EventBridge helps respond to events and automate actions, while X-Ray helps analyse and troubleshoot application requests and performance issues.
Note that;
This module helped me understand that logging and monitoring work together to improve cloud security and visibility. While logging records what happened, monitoring helps us observe activity and identify issues. Using tools such as CloudTrail, CloudWatch, and VPC Flow Logs helps AWS users investigate incidents, troubleshoot problems, and maintain a more secure cloud environment.
