☁️ Day 5 of my 90-day AWS learning journey: Understanding Amazon S3
Yesterday, I explored EC2 instance types and learned how to choose computing resources based on an application's needs.
Today, I learned about another important AWS service: Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).
Amazon S3 is an object storage service that allows us to store and retrieve data such as images, documents, videos, backups, and application files.
Here are five things I learned today:
🔹 Buckets: Containers used to organize and store objects in S3.
🔹 Objects: The actual data stored in S3, along with associated metadata.
🔹 Object keys: Names that identify objects within a bucket.
🔹 Storage classes: Different options help match storage costs and retrieval needs, from frequently accessed data to long-term archives.
🔹 Security: Keeping data private, managing permissions, and understanding encryption are essential when working with cloud storage.
💡 My biggest takeaway: Storing data in the cloud is not just about uploading files. We also need to think about how frequently data is accessed, who can access it, and how much it costs to store and retrieve.
I'm continuing to build my AWS fundamentals one concept at a time.
Question for the AWS community 👇
When designing an application that stores user-uploaded files, what do you consider first: storage class, security, access patterns, or cost?
I'd love to learn from your experience!
