Selecting the right Model for your Agent and why it matters

Selecting a foundation model for an AI agent is less about finding the model with the highest benchmark score and more about matching the model to the agent's actual workload. In Amazon Bedrock, AWS explicitly positions model selection as a balance among performance, cost, and accuracy, with the ability to evaluate and replace models as requirements evolve

Talking about how to choose the right model, we can look at 6 factors:
  1. Reasoning and task complexity
    Start by asking what decisions the agent actually has to make. A straightforward FAQ or classification agent does not necessarily need a frontier reasoning model. An agent that must interpret ambiguous requests, create multi-step plans, call several APIs and reason over their responses benefits much more from a capable model.
    A useful principle is:Use the smallest model that reliably completes the task, not the largest model available.This becomes especially important when the agent may invoke the model several times to complete a single user request.
  2. Tool use and agentic behavior
    For agents, raw language quality is not enough. Evaluate how reliably the model can:
    - select the correct tool;
    - construct structured arguments such as JSON;
    - interpret tool responses;
    - recover from a failed action;
    - maintain instructions across several reasoning steps.
  3. Latency, throughput and cost
    These three characteristics should be evaluated together.
    Imagine a customer-service agent processing thousands of conversations. A small reduction in inference cost multiplied across several model calls per conversation can become significant. Conversely, using a cheap model that frequently chooses the wrong tool may actually increase the cost per successfully completed task.
  4. Context, RAG and input modality
    Consider what information the agent consumes.
    A document agent may require a large context window, whereas an agent using RAG through a knowledge base may receive only a few retrieved chunks. An agent processing screenshots, PDFs, photos, audio or video introduces additional modality requirements.
  5. Deployment and governance constraints
    Model choice can also be an architectural decision. Check:
    - availability in your required AWS Region;
    - supported modalities;
    - required Bedrock features;
    - privacy/security requirements;
    - context-window requirements;
    - whether customization is necessary.
  6. Evaluate using your own agent tasks
    Generic benchmarks are useful for screening models, but the final decision should come from an evaluation dataset representative of production, evaluating:Task success → correct tool selection → correct parameters → answer quality → latency → cost.
    This often reveals that no single model is optimal for every step.

Practical model choices

Amazon Bedrock currently provides models from numerous providers, including Amazon, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral AI, Cohere, DeepSeek, OpenAI, Qwen and others.
From an architecture perspective, we can structure a cheat-sheet roughly like this:
Model familyGood candidate for
Anthropic Claude SonnetGeneral-purpose agents, complex tool orchestration, coding, document-intensive workflows
Anthropic Claude HaikuHigh-volume and latency-sensitive agents where the reasoning workload is lighter
Amazon Nova Lite / MicroCost-sensitive classification, routing and simpler agent tasks
Amazon Nova ProGeneral-purpose AWS-centric agent workloads where stronger reasoning or multimodal understanding is required
Meta LlamaWorkloads where the Llama ecosystem or open-weight model lineage is strategically valuable
Cohere Command R / R+A candidate worth evaluating for retrieval-oriented and enterprise knowledge workloads
Specialized reasoning/coding modelsAgents dominated by difficult reasoning, software engineering or specialized tasks
