My 12-Month Plan to Get AWS Certified as a Student (Using the Free Skill Builder Access)

How I'm planning to use AWS Student Rewards, from Cloud Practitioner to an Associate certification, while building hands-on projects and earning badges along the way.

Why I'm doing this

I'm a computing student in Malaysia focusing on data analytics and AI. I recently verified my student status on AWS Builder Center and unlocked 12 months of AWS Skill Builder access. Instead of letting it sit unused, I wanted to set a clear plan for the year and share it, both to keep myself accountable and to help other students who just signed up and aren't sure where to start.

What verified students get

  • 12 months of Skill Builder access: 900+ courses, hands-on labs, exam prep, and game-based learning like AWS Cloud Quest, AWS Jam, and AWS SimuLearn
  • Badge rewards: $10 AWS credits at 7 badges, $20 at 14 badges, and a $100 Foundational certification voucher at 21 badges
One thing I learned early: the "1 year free" is for the training platform, not free AWS usage. Exams and real AWS resources are separate, so it's worth planning carefully.

My roadmap

Phase 1: Set up (Week 1)

  • Verify student status and complete my profile
  • Read how badges work and start a daily activity streak
  • Join spaces related to data, AI, and certifications

Phase 2: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (Months 1–2)

  • Follow the Cloud Practitioner exam prep plan on Skill Builder
  • Use AWS Cloud Quest to practise core services hands-on
  • Take practice exams before booking
  • Use the 21-badge voucher for the exam

Phase 3: AWS Certified AI Practitioner (Months 3–4)

Since my studies involve deep learning and data analytics, this is a natural next step. I'll focus on generative AI fundamentals, prompt engineering, and Amazon Bedrock.

Phase 4: One Associate certification (Months 5–11)

I'm deciding between:
  • Data Engineer Associate: fits data analytics (Glue, Athena, Redshift, Kinesis)
  • Machine Learning Engineer Associate: fits ML and model deployment (SageMaker, MLOps)
For this phase I'll rely heavily on Builder Labs and AWS Jam, because associate exams test practical judgment, not just definitions.

Throughout: Build and share

  • Build one end-to-end data project and write about it here
  • Use Builder Center Workshops, which provide free sandbox environments
  • Publish what I learn regularly as articles

A tip for other students

If you open your own AWS account to practise, set up an AWS Budgets alert on day one. Forgetting to stop an EC2 instance or database is the most common way students end up with surprise bills. Use sandbox labs and workshops whenever possible.

What's next

I'll post updates as I go, including study notes, what worked, and how the exams went. If you're also using Student Rewards, I'd love to hear which certification you're aiming for. Let's learn together!
