I Finally Understood What an AI Agent Actually Is

My simple understanding of AI agents, how they are different from chatbots, and why I think they could be useful for students and developers.

For a while, whenever I heard the term "AI agent", I honestly thought it was just another name for a chatbot.
The more I started learning about AI agents, the more I realized that there is an important difference.
A chatbot mainly responds to what you ask it. An AI agent can go a step further by deciding what actions it needs to take to complete a task.
For example, if I ask a chatbot, "Help me prepare for my exam," it might give me a study plan.
But imagine an AI agent that could actually take my syllabus, look at my available time, create a study schedule, generate practice questions, identify the topics I am weak in, and then adjust the schedule based on my progress.
That feels much more useful to me.
As a student, this is probably the kind of AI agent I would actually want to build.
I have also started realizing that building an AI agent is not just about choosing an AI model and giving it a prompt. There are many other things involved, such as tools, data, memory, APIs, decision-making and the ability to interact with other services.
This is where cloud computing becomes interesting.
Services such as Amazon Bedrock can provide access to foundation models, while other AWS services can be used to build the different parts around the AI system.
I'm still learning how all of these pieces fit together, so I'm trying not to focus only on the latest AI tools. I want to understand what is happening behind the scenes and eventually build something that actually solves a problem.
One thing I've learned so far is that an AI agent doesn't need to be a huge or complicated project.
Sometimes the best project idea is simply something that solves a problem you personally have.
For me, that would be a student agent that helps me learn better instead of just giving me another chatbot to talk to.
I'm curious about what other builders think.
If you could build one AI agent for yourself today, what would you make it do?
