I Hosted My Personal Website for FREE Using Amazon S3 - No Server Needed!
Learn how I hosted my personal portfolio website for free using Amazon S3 static website hosting, without managing any servers, and why every student should try it.
Introduction
As a student, I always wanted my own portfolio website but hosting costs were high. Last week, I discovered I can host it for FREE using Amazon S3.
In this article, I will share my step-by-step journey.
Why Amazon S3 for Hosting?
Many students don't know that S3 is not just for storage.
- Free Tier: Almost free for personal portfolio.
- No Server Management: You don't need to manage EC2 or servers.
- Super Fast: S3 serves your website with high availability.
- Easy to Use: Just upload your HTML files.
This is different from EC2 where you manage the server, and Lambda where you manage code. Here you only manage your files.
My Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Create an S3 Bucket
I created a bucket with the same name as my domain idea, like
my-portfolio-rutikaStep 2: Enable Static Website Hosting
In Properties > Static website hosting > Enable. I set Index document as
index.htmlStep 3: Make it Public (Carefully)
I unchecked "Block all public access" and added a simple Bucket Policy to allow reading.
Step 4: Upload My Files
I uploaded my
index.html, style.css and images. That's it!In 2 minutes, I got my website link:

- S3 is the easiest way to start your cloud journey.
- You don't need to be an expert to host a website on AWS.
- This project helped me understand buckets, permissions, and static hosting practically.
What's Next?
My next goal is to add Amazon CloudFront to make it faster and add a custom domain with Route 53.
