IAM Roles Explained 🔐
Confused by AWS IAM terminology? Here is the simplest way to understand how Roles and Policies actually work together.
Identity and Access Management (IAM) is the backbone of AWS security, but the terminology can easily trip up beginners. The two concepts that seem to get mixed up the most are Policies and Roles.
Here is the easiest way to keep them straight:
- Policies are the "Rules": A policy is simply a document (written in JSON) that states exactly what action is allowed or denied. (e.g., "Allow read access to this specific S3 bucket").
- Roles are the "Hats": A role is an identity that can be temporarily adopted. You attach Policies (Rules) to the Role (Hat).
Instead of giving permanent, hard-coded permissions to an application or an EC2 instance, you let them "wear the hat" of a Role just for the time they need to do their job. Once they take the hat off, the permissions are gone. It is much more secure!
