πŸ€– Build an AI Developer Companion on AWS

Build Orbit with Amazon Bedrock, Lambda and Cognito. Follow a practical guide from a local simulator to an authenticated AWS deployment.

Series: Building an AI Developer Companion on AWS (2 articles)

πŸ€– Build an AI Developer Companion on AWS This article
A useful AI companion needs clear boundaries between the browser, the user and the model.
In this four-part series, we will build Orbit, a developer learning companion: conversation first, then explicit memory, daily practice and voice. This first article includes a compact, runnable conversation interface and the shared backend. Later parts extend the interface. The cover is conceptual; the app uses a simple animated face.

What runs where

The local simulator uses scripted replies and SQLite, with no AWS calls. Cloud mode uses Cognito sign-in, API Gateway, Lambda and Bedrock for authenticated model-generated conversation. Keep Lesson=1 for this article.

Browser β†’ CloudFront β†’ private S3 assets
Browser β†’ Cognito authorization code + PKCE
Browser β†’ API Gateway JWT authorizer β†’ Lambda β†’ Bedrock
β†’ DynamoDB usage counter
The browser receives no AWS keys. The API requires orbit/use; Lambda derives identity from the validated subject claim. See the JWT authorizer documentationΒ . CloudFront uses origin access control for the private bucket.
Orbit sends at most four recent complete conversation pairs to Bedrock ConverseΒ . System roles and extra fields are rejected. Replies render as text. The model has no tools; prompt wording alone cannot prevent prompt injection.

Run locally

Save the source blocks below under an app/ directory, preserving paths. With Python 3.10+:
1
2
cd app
python3 local.py --lesson 1
Open http://127.0.0.1:8765. Send a message and start a new conversation. Replies are visibly scripted. The local server binds to loopback and must not be exposed publicly. Its speed does not measure AWS inference performance.

Deploy to a sandbox account

You need AWS CLI credentials, SAM CLI and a working Docker engine. Verify model access and availability for amazon.nova-micro-v1:0 in us-east-1; changing to an inference profile also requires changing the IAM policy. These resources can incur charges. Configure a budget alert and review Bedrock pricingΒ .

export AWS_PROFILE=your-sandbox-profile
export AWS_DEFAULT_REGION=us-east-1
aws sts get-caller-identity
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r requirements-dev.txt
sam validate --lint
sam build --use-container
sam deploy --guided
Use stack orbit-lab, Lesson=1, and the default model after checking availability. Allow IAM role creation, keep rollback enabled, save configuration and inspect the change set before deployment. CloudFront creation can take several minutes. Then:
1
2
3
4
python scripts/export_config.py --stack orbit-lab
WEB_BUCKET=$(aws cloudformation describe-stacks --stack-name orbit-lab --query 'Stacks[0].Outputs[?OutputKey==`WebBucket`].OutputValue' --output text)
aws s3 sync web/ "s3://$WEB_BUCKET/"
python scripts/create_user.py --stack orbit-lab --username builder
The helper prompts for a password. Open the printed CloudFront URL and sign in. Tokens stay in page memory; reload requires sign-in. Signup is invite-only. If password setup fails after user creation, reset it through Cognito.

Verify the deployment

The shared application logic and mocked SDK contracts have passed local tests, and the SAM template passed lint validation. A live AWS deployment has not been verified for this article. In your account, confirm unsigned requests fail, a signed-in user receives a real model response, Lambda logs token usage, and anonymous direct S3 reads fail while CloudFront works. Do not put secrets into chat.
The backend allows 40 attempted chat calls per user per UTC day; failed upstream calls also consume an attempt. Throttling and concurrency limits are additional controls, not an account-wide spending cap. Check Lambda concurrency quotas before deployment. For a 503, check Region, model access, IAM and logs.

Clean up

Verify that WEB_BUCKET is the disposable lab bucket before the deletion command below. It permanently removes its objects.
1
2
3
4
aws s3 ls "s3://$WEB_BUCKET/"
# Only after checking the bucket belongs to this lab:
aws s3 rm "s3://$WEB_BUCKET/" --recursive
sam delete --stack-name orbit-lab --region us-east-1
Wait for stack deletion and inspect failures. Local data remains separately in .local/orbit.sqlite. In part 2 we will expose the backend's explicit, user-controlled memory in the interface.

Complete source for this installment

This shared backend includes later-stage logic; the frontend exposes conversation. Use Lesson=1.
