From Code to Certification: How Building an AI Agent is Fueling My AIF-C01 Prep
With my automated AI code reviewer, DeepPR, successfully built and deployed, I am shifting my focus to the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) exam. Here is how hands-on building translates to exam readiness.
Hello AWS Community! 👋
Now that my recent building sprint has wrapped up and DeepPR (my serverless AI code review agent) is officially deployed, I am pivoting my energy toward my next major goal: passing the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) exam and completing the 21-Badge challenge!
Studying for a certification can sometimes feel dry if you are just reading whitepapers. However, I’ve found that actually building a generative AI application on AWS has made the exam domains click in a way that rote memorization never could.
Here is how my hands-on experience building DeepPR is directly translating to my AIF-C01 study plan:
Domain 3: Applications of Foundation Models
The heaviest section of the AIF-C01 exam (28%) focuses on how to actually apply GenAI. While building DeepPR, I integrated Amazon Bedrock to invoke Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku for analyzing code diffs.
- The Practical Lesson: I learned firsthand how to use Bedrock's "Tool Use" (function calling) to force the LLM to output strictly formatted JSON instead of hallucinated markdown.
- The Exam Benefit: When practice questions ask about prompt engineering techniques, controlling model parameters (temperature/top-p), or selecting the right foundation model for a latency-sensitive task, I don't have to guess—I just remember the architectural decisions I made for DeepPR.
Domain 5: Security, Compliance, and Governance
Security makes up 14% of the exam, and AWS takes it very seriously.
- The Practical Lesson: Getting my FastAPI backend (running on AWS Lambda) to successfully communicate with Amazon Bedrock was an initial struggle. I had to dive deep into AWS IAM to attach specific execution roles (
bedrock:InvokeModel) while adhering to the principle of least privilege. - The Exam Benefit: I now deeply understand how AI services interact securely within a VPC and how resource-based policies operate in the real world, which makes the governance questions much easier to tackle.
Bridging the Gap
Building a serverless pipeline (GitHub Webhooks → API Gateway → SQS → Lambda → Bedrock → DynamoDB) forced me to understand the broader AWS ecosystem, not just the AI tools in isolation.
As I spend these next few weeks taking practice exams and reviewing the Responsible AI guidelines, I am so grateful I took the time to build something real first.
