Amazon EC2 — Understanding Virtual Servers in the Cloud

Introduction

When building an application, we need a computer to run our code, store data, and handle user requests. But what if we don't want to buy and maintain a physical server?
That's where Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) comes in!

What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon EC2 is an AWS service that provides virtual servers in the cloud. We can use these servers to run applications, host websites, and process data without owning physical hardware.

How does it work?

Imagine you are hosting a website:
  1. Launch an EC2 instance: Create a virtual server on AWS.
  2. Choose an operating system: Select Linux or Windows.
  3. Configure the instance: Choose computing power, storage, and security settings.
  4. Deploy your application: Run your code on the server.
  5. Scale when needed: Increase or decrease resources based on demand.

Key Features of EC2

  • Flexible: Choose computing resources according to your needs.
  • Scalable: Adjust capacity as your application grows.
  • Cost-effective: Pay for the resources you use, subject to the pricing model.
  • Secure: Configure network access and permissions to protect your server.

A Real-World Example

Suppose you build a React frontend with a Java backend. You can host the backend on an EC2 instance so users can send requests to your application over the internet.
Instead of purchasing a physical server, you rent computing resources from AWS.

What I Learned Today

Amazon EC2 makes cloud computing practical by providing on-demand virtual servers. It helps developers deploy applications without managing physical hardware.
My takeaway: EC2 provides the computing power, while services like Amazon S3 provide object storage. Understanding how these services work together is an important step toward becoming an AWS Cloud Builder.
