How I Built FLOOD SAFE: Serverless Flood Risk Alerts for Chennai on AWS

I built FLOOD SAFE, a serverless flood risk assessment tool for Chennai, using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, SNS and Amplify. It scores 6 flood-prone zones, gives advice in English and Tamil, and emails alerts to every subscriber in one click. Here is the architecture, the bugs I hit, and what I learned.

🌊 The problem

Every monsoon, Chennai gets generic warnings like "heavy rain expected." They don't tell you which area is at risk, why, or where to go. For places like Velachery and Pallikaranai, that gap matters.
I built FLOOD SAFE for the AWS Environmental Hackathon to close it.
FLOOD SAFE is a risk assessment tool, not a flood prediction system. It shows vulnerability, it does not forecast floods.

✨ What it does

For each of 6 Chennai zones, FLOOD SAFE shows:
  • βœ… Risk level and the reasons behind it
  • ⏱️ Expected impact window
  • 🚧 Blocked or at-risk roads
  • 🏠 Nearest candidate shelter and πŸ₯ nearest hospital
  • πŸ—£οΈ Advice in English and Tamil
  • πŸ“§ One-click email alert to every confirmed subscriber
It also has a Simulation mode (NORMAL, MODERATE, HEAVY, EXTREME) for drills and demos, and a Live mode using real rainfall.
