The Last Forest: Turning Environmental Data into Action for Water Conservation

The Last Forest is an interactive environmental monitoring prototype promoting water conservation awareness. Using Arduino UNO Q, a soil moisture sensor, and a DHT11, it collects environmental readings. AWS Lambda and API Gateway process the data, while a React-based fantasy forest visualizes the forest's state. Designed for students, home gardeners, and sustainability enthusiasts, it encourages informed watering decisions through an engaging blend of hardware, cloud computing, and interactive design.

The Last Forest is an interactive environmental monitoring prototype that promotes water conservation awareness and informed plant-care decisions. Using a soil moisture sensor, temperature and humidity sensing, and AWS cloud processing, it translates real-world environmental readings into forest health states displayed through an interactive React interface. Designed for home gardeners, students, and sustainability enthusiasts, it encourages users to consider soil conditions before watering, helping raise awareness of unnecessary water use and plant water stress. By combining physical sensors, AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and a fantasy-inspired guardian companion, The Last Forest makes environmental monitoring more engaging and accessible. The prototype captures three environmental outputs: soil moisture-related readings, temperature (°C), and relative humidity (%). The soil moisture sensor provides analog readings that are interpreted using configured thresholds to classify the forest as HEALTHY, THIRSTY, or CRITICAL. The DHT11 sensor supplies temperature and humidity measurements to provide additional environmental context. These readings are transferred to the React interface and sent through Amazon API Gateway to AWS Lambda, where the incoming data is processed to determine the forest's state and corresponding response. The website displays the live sensor values and reflects the resulting state, connecting real-world environmental monitoring with an interactive digital experience.
