FeedSure CBG: Turning Food Waste into Fuel Through Better Coordination
Every day, hotels, hostels, PGs, and canteens generate large amounts of food waste. Some of this waste could be used as feedstock for Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants, helping turn an everyday waste-management problem into a useful energy resource.
But there is a practical challenge: getting the waste from the kitchen to the plant reliably.
A supplier may have waste ready, but the dispatcher might not know the available quantity. A truck might arrive at the wrong time or exceed its capacity. Even after collection, the weight recorded by the driver may differ from what the plant receives.
These gaps can make the entire process difficult to manage.
That is the problem we set out to solve with FeedSure CBG.
One workflow, four roles
FeedSure CBG is an operational platform that connects food-waste suppliers, dispatchers, drivers, and CBG plant operators through a single collection workflow.
The process follows four stages:
- Ready — Suppliers confirm the estimated quantity of available food waste and their preferred pickup window.
- Plan — Dispatchers review supplier readiness, check truck capacity and pickup timings, resolve conflicts, and prepare a feasible route.
- Collect — Drivers follow the assigned route and record whether each pickup was completed, partially completed, or skipped.
- Reconcile — Plant operators record the net weight received and compare it with the driver's collection records.
This creates a traceable record of what was confirmed, what was collected, and what actually reached the plant.
The important part is that collection and intake are treated as separate events. Recording a pickup does not automatically mean the plant received the same quantity.
Built to solve an operational problem
We wanted to build more than a dashboard that displays collection data. The goal was to connect the different people involved in the process and make each handoff easier to track.
FeedSure CBG helps dispatchers make informed routing decisions, gives drivers a clear record of pickup outcomes, and allows plant operators to identify differences between collected and received quantities.
By bringing these steps together, the platform aims to reduce missed pickups, improve collection planning, and make records more reliable.
Building FeedSure CBG on AWS
We deployed FeedSure CBG on Amazon Web Services in the Mumbai region (ap-south-1), using a serverless architecture.
The frontend is built with React and Vite and hosted on AWS Amplify Hosting. The backend uses Python 3.12 on AWS Lambda, with Amazon API Gateway providing HTTP API endpoints for communication between the frontend and backend.
Amazon DynamoDB stores the collection records across seven pay-per-request tables. Amazon S3 provides private storage for supplier photo evidence, with encryption and secure transport requirements. AWS IAM manages permissions, while AWS SAM and AWS CloudFormation define and deploy the infrastructure as code.
One of the most useful parts of this setup was AWS SAM. Keeping the infrastructure in a single template made deployments reproducible and simplified changes to backend resources and permissions.
We also used Moto to test backend handlers against emulated AWS services. Our test suite includes 280 backend tests, helping us verify important parts of the workflow without depending on a live AWS account for every test.
The application also includes adapters for Amazon Bedrock image analysis and Amazon Location Service routing calculations. For this deployment, these integrations use mocked implementations or labelled fallback estimates so the core demonstration does not depend on model-access approval or live routing calculations.
Designing for the people who use it
FeedSure CBG has four role-specific interfaces: supplier, dispatcher, driver, and CBG plant owner.
Each interface supports a different part of the same collection process. We also designed an editorial-style landing page with an interactive collection-journey concept to explain how food waste moves from its source to the plant.
Beyond the visual design, we focused on responsive layouts, accessible interactions, and reduced-motion support so the application remains usable across different devices and user preferences.
Authentication, role-based access, private evidence storage, and clear operational records are important parts of the overall system.
What we learned
Building FeedSure CBG gave us practical experience in designing a complete serverless application, from infrastructure and APIs to frontend workflows and automated testing.
We also learned that integrating cloud services involves more than writing application code. Runtime compatibility, model-access permissions, CORS configuration, deployment choices, and local testing all affect how smoothly a system can be built and demonstrated.
Using infrastructure as code and keeping optional integrations separate from the core workflow helped us make the deployment more reproducible and the demo more reliable.
Most importantly, the project reinforced a simple lesson: solving an operational problem requires understanding the entire process, not just one step in it.
What comes next
FeedSure CBG is a step toward making food-waste collection more coordinated and accountable. Future improvements could include live route-distance calculations, AI-assisted waste-photo analysis, and better operational insights based on actual collection records.
The long-term goal is straightforward: make it easier for food-waste suppliers, collection teams, and CBG plants to work together so that more usable organic waste can reach the right destination.
Because a successful collection is not just about what leaves the kitchen. It is about what reaches the plant, what gets recorded, and whether everyone involved can trust that record.
That is what we are building FeedSure CBG to achieve.
