VayuRakshak: A Smarter Way to Protect Students from Air Pollution in Delhi-NCR

Turning Air Quality Data into Actionable School Safety Insights

Introduction

Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Delhi-NCR, particularly during periods of severe pollution when outdoor activities can become unsafe. Students are especially vulnerable because they spend a significant part of their day in and around school environments.
But what if schools could move beyond simply checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) and make more informed decisions about student safety?
That is the idea behind VayuRakshak — a smart, technology-driven platform designed to help schools understand air-quality conditions, monitor pollution-related risks, and make better-informed decisions using digital tools and cloud technology.

The Problem We Want to Solve

During periods of high air pollution, schools and administrators face several challenges:
  • Limited awareness: Air-quality information may be available, but it is not always presented in a way that helps school administrators make quick decisions.
  • Delayed responses: Schools need clear information to determine when outdoor activities should be reconsidered.
  • GRAP compliance: Understanding and following the appropriate measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) can be challenging without accessible, organized information.
  • Fragmented information: Pollution levels, safety recommendations, and school-related decisions can be difficult to manage in one place.
We wanted to explore how technology could help bridge this gap and make environmental information more useful for the people responsible for student safety.

Introducing VayuRakshak

VayuRakshak is a web-based platform focused on school air-quality awareness and GRAP compliance across Delhi-NCR.
The goal is simple: transform environmental information into practical insights that can support better decisions.
Instead of treating pollution data as just another number on a screen, VayuRakshak aims to connect air-quality awareness with school safety, environmental monitoring, and actionable guidance.
The platform is designed with three key priorities:
  1. Awareness: Make air-quality conditions easier to understand.
  1. Action: Help users interpret pollution-related risks and relevant safety measures.
  1. Scalability: Build a foundation that can evolve with cloud infrastructure and future intelligent monitoring capabilities.

Key Features and Capabilities

1. Air-Quality Awareness

Air pollution can change throughout the day. Making air-quality information accessible helps users understand environmental conditions and consider appropriate precautions.
VayuRakshak focuses on presenting information in a user-friendly format so that environmental awareness can become part of everyday school safety planning.

2. GRAP Compliance Support

The Graded Response Action Plan provides a framework for responding to worsening air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.
VayuRakshak is designed to support awareness of relevant GRAP measures and their implications for school environments. This can help administrators better understand the precautions and restrictions that may apply under different pollution conditions.
Official government advisories should always remain the authoritative source for mandatory actions and restrictions.

3. A School-Centric Approach

General air-quality applications primarily focus on reporting pollution levels. VayuRakshak takes a school-oriented approach by connecting environmental awareness with the needs of students and school administrators.
The broader vision is to help schools incorporate pollution awareness into decisions involving outdoor activities, safety communication, and preparedness.

4. Cloud-Ready Architecture

VayuRakshak is deployed as a web application using AWS Amplify Hosting, providing a publicly accessible platform.
The project also explores a serverless AWS architecture that can support future expansion, including automated data processing, telemetry storage, and notification delivery.

How AWS Fits into VayuRakshak

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the opportunity to use cloud technology to build a scalable environmental monitoring solution.
AWS provides services that can support different parts of the proposed architecture.

AWS Amplify — Web Hosting and Deployment

AWS Amplify hosts the VayuRakshak web application and provides a foundation for publishing updates and making the platform accessible online.
This makes it easier to demonstrate the project through a live URL rather than relying only on a local development environment.

AWS Lambda — Serverless Processing

AWS Lambda can be used to process incoming air-quality data, execute backend logic, and prepare information for the application without requiring continuously running servers.
For example, a future implementation could use Lambda functions to validate incoming measurements and generate pollution-related summaries.

Amazon EventBridge — Scheduled Updates

Amazon EventBridge can trigger scheduled workflows, such as periodically initiating data collection or processing tasks.
When integrated with an appropriate air-quality data source, this could help automate updates and reduce the need for manual monitoring.

Amazon DynamoDB — Scalable Data Storage

Amazon DynamoDB can provide a managed NoSQL database for storing structured telemetry, processed air-quality readings, timestamps, and related monitoring information.
This would provide a foundation for retrieving historical data and analyzing pollution trends over time.

Amazon SNS — Notification Delivery

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) can support notifications when configured with suitable rules and event-processing logic.
For instance, a future version could notify designated school administrators when validated air-quality measurements cross configured thresholds.

Amazon API Gateway — Backend Connectivity

Amazon API Gateway can expose backend functionality through APIs, allowing the frontend to communicate with serverless processing services.
Together, these services offer a potential architecture for evolving VayuRakshak into a more automated and data-driven platform.
Note: AWS services listed beyond the live Amplify deployment describe the proposed architecture and potential integrations, not a claim that every service is already implemented in the current application.

The Proposed System Architecture

The architecture can be understood as a sequence of connected components:
  1. Data sources: Air-quality readings and relevant environmental information are obtained from appropriate sources.
  1. Scheduled processing: Amazon EventBridge can trigger periodic workflows.
  1. Data processing: AWS Lambda can validate, process, and organize incoming information.
  1. Data storage: Amazon DynamoDB can store readings and historical records.
  1. API layer: Amazon API Gateway can make processed information available to the frontend.
  1. User interface: AWS Amplify hosts the web application through which users can access relevant information.
  1. Notifications: Amazon SNS can distribute configured alerts to designated recipients.
This architecture is intended to support modular development, easier maintenance, and future scalability.

What Makes VayuRakshak Different?

The core idea is not simply to display air-quality information. It is to explore how that information can become more useful in a real-world setting.
A focus on students: The project centers on the safety needs of school communities.
A regional perspective: It addresses the specific challenges associated with air pollution and GRAP measures in Delhi-NCR.
A cloud-first direction: The proposed architecture uses managed AWS services to support future automation and expansion.
A practical use case for technology: It connects environmental awareness with decisions that schools may need to make during periods of poor air quality.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

Building a hackathon project requires balancing ambition with the time available.
One important challenge is designing a solution that is both technically achievable and relevant to a real-world problem. Air-quality monitoring is not just about building a dashboard; it also involves data reliability, timely updates, meaningful thresholds, and clear communication.
Another challenge is planning an architecture that can grow without making the initial application unnecessarily complicated.
Working on VayuRakshak reinforced several important lessons:
  • Start with a clearly defined problem and target audience.
  • Design the user experience around decisions people actually need to make.
  • Separate the frontend from backend responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Use cloud services according to their strengths rather than adding technology without a clear purpose.
  • Treat data quality and the reliability of safety-related information as essential requirements.
The project also highlighted the importance of distinguishing between a working prototype and capabilities planned for future development.

Future Scope

VayuRakshak has several potential directions for further development.

Real-Time Air-Quality Integration

Integrating reliable external air-quality APIs or monitoring stations could provide regularly updated measurements for supported locations.

Intelligent Risk Analysis

Machine learning could help analyze historical pollution patterns and estimate potential changes in air quality. Any predictions would need to be validated against reliable data before being used for decision-making.

Automated Alerts

A future version could send configurable notifications to school administrators when verified readings exceed predefined thresholds.

Historical Trends and Analytics

Historical data could help users compare pollution levels across time periods and better understand recurring environmental patterns.

Expanded School Coverage

The platform could eventually support additional locations across Delhi-NCR, with location-specific information and configurable monitoring.
These enhancements would be developed incrementally, with particular attention to data accuracy, responsible alerts, and the reliability of safety-related recommendations.
