EcoSort
EcoSort addresses the lack of environmental awareness and poor waste-segregation habits by turning learning about pollution, waste disposal, and recycling into an interactive 3D game. Who is it for? It is designed mainly for children and students, but families and the general public can also use it to learn responsible waste management and develop eco-friendly habits through fun missions and AI-guided learning.
EcoSort: Making Environmental Learning Fun Through a 3D Game Built with AWS
Introduction
Environmental pollution and improper waste disposal are growing concerns in our communities. Although many people know that recycling and waste segregation are important, they may not always understand how to dispose of different types of waste or how unmanaged waste affects people and the environment.
To address this challenge, we developed EcoSort — a 3D Web Game for Environmental Awareness. Our goal is to make environmental education more interactive, engaging, and practical by allowing users to learn through gameplay rather than simply reading instructions.
The Problem We Want to Solve
Waste segregation is an essential step toward a cleaner environment, but many people struggle to identify the correct way to dispose of everyday waste. Improper disposal can contribute to pollution, clogged drains, unpleasant surroundings, and conditions that attract pests.
Traditional environmental awareness campaigns often rely on posters, lectures, and written information. These methods are useful, but they may not provide enough hands-on engagement, especially for children and students.
We wanted to create a solution that makes learning about waste management enjoyable while encouraging responsible habits that users can apply in their daily lives.
Introducing EcoSort
EcoSort is an interactive 3D environmental learning game in which players explore a virtual neighbourhood and take action to make it cleaner and healthier.
Players begin in a neighbourhood affected by unmanaged waste. They collect litter, identify different waste items, sort them into appropriate bins, and learn about the consequences of improper disposal. As players complete missions, they can see how their actions contribute to a cleaner virtual environment.
The game is designed primarily for children and students, but it can also help families and the general public develop better waste-management habits.
Key Features
- Interactive 3D Environment
Players explore a virtual neighbourhood and discover waste-related problems in their surroundings. The 3D environment makes environmental learning more visual and engaging.
- Eco Lens
The Eco Lens helps players identify waste items, understand their potential harm to humans and the environment, and learn the appropriate disposal method. This feature encourages users to understand not only where waste belongs but also why responsible disposal matters.
- AI Eco Assistant
The AI Eco Assistant acts as a friendly environmental guide. Players can ask questions, get explanations, and learn useful tips about recycling, pollution, and sustainability.
- Waste-Sorting Missions
Players collect waste and sort it into the appropriate categories. The game provides an opportunity to practise waste segregation in a safe, virtual environment. Actual disposal rules may vary by location, so the game aims to reinforce locally appropriate guidance.
- Before-and-After Environmental Impact
Players can compare the neighbourhood before and after completing cleanup activities. This visual feedback demonstrates how small actions can contribute to a cleaner community.
How We Use AWS
AWS provides cloud services that can support EcoSort's backend, content delivery, AI assistance, and monitoring.
- Amazon S3: Stores game assets and other static files.
- Amazon CloudFront: Delivers game content to users efficiently.
- Amazon API Gateway: Provides API endpoints for communication between the game and backend.
- AWS Lambda: Runs backend logic, such as processing game requests and updating progress.
- Amazon DynamoDB: Stores player progress, scores, and related game data.
- Amazon Bedrock: Can power the AI Eco Assistant, helping it answer environmental questions.
- Amazon Polly: Can convert text responses into speech to make learning more accessible.
- Amazon CloudWatch: Helps monitor application performance, logs, and errors.
Together, these services can provide a flexible foundation for a web-based educational game. The specific services used in the final implementation depend on the components deployed and configured by our team.
Why We Chose This Approach
We believe that environmental awareness becomes more meaningful when people can experience the consequences of their actions. EcoSort combines interactive gameplay with educational information to make learning more memorable.
By combining a 3D environment, guided waste sorting, and AI-assisted explanations, we aim to make environmental education more accessible and enjoyable. AWS cloud services also offer a path toward expanding the experience with additional missions, learning content, and player progress tracking.
Future Scope
EcoSort can be expanded with new levels focused on river pollution, plastic waste, recycling centres, and water conservation. Future versions could also include multilingual support, classroom challenges, quizzes, community leaderboards, and additional AI-guided learning activities.
We also aim to improve accessibility so that more learners can participate regardless of their experience with games or technology.
Conclusion
EcoSort is built around a simple idea: learning to protect the environment should be engaging, practical, and accessible to everyone.
By turning waste segregation and pollution awareness into an interactive 3D experience, we hope to encourage better everyday habits and inspire people to take greater responsibility for their surroundings.
With the support of cloud technologies and AI capabilities, EcoSort has the potential to grow into a learning platform that connects digital experiences with real-world environmental responsibility.
Small actions. Smarter choices. A cleaner tomorrow.
