Building a Smart E-Waste Recycling Portal

📌 Introduction

Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest-growing environmental hazards globally. Millions of tons of old phones, chargers, and household electronics end up in landfills, causing toxic contamination. The primary challenge isn't a lack of recycling facilities, but the absence of convenient, transparent, and rewarding channels for everyday households to dispose of their e-waste responsibly.
To address this gap, I built the E-Waste Recycling Portal for the AWS Environmental Hackathon—a full-stack web application designed to bridge the gap between consumers and authorized recycling agencies.


🚀 Key Features & Capabilities

  1. User Authentication & Personal Dashboard: Users can easily sign up, log in, and track their recycling history in one clean dashboard.
  1. Categorized E-Waste Logging: A structured entry system allowing users to select specific item categories (e.g., Small Appliances, Batteries, Mobile Devices) and detail their condition.
  1. Proof Verification Utility: Enables users to upload handover receipts or collection images to ensure authentic recycling processing.
  1. Instant E-Certificate Generation: To incentivize eco-friendly actions, the app dynamically generates an official Certificate of Appreciation complete with a unique tracking ID ( EW-2026-xxxxx ), timestamp, and QR code verification.
  1. PDF Export & Sharing: Built-in utilities to print or export certificates directly to PDF for social sharing and record-keeping.


🛠️ Tech Stack & Architecture

  • Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (Fully responsive UI tailored for both desktop and mobile devices).
  • Deployment & Hosting: Global edge distribution with SSL/HTTPS encryption for low-latency user access.
  • AWS Scaling Potential: Structured to integrate smoothly with AWS Amplify for hosting, AWS S3 for storage, and AWS DynamoDB for log records in the next phase.
