Building JalSetu: An AWS-Powered Approach to Water Management and Flood Preparedness
Discover how JalSetu explores cloud technology for water management and flood preparedness, including its architecture, AWS integration, development challenges, and future possibilities.
Introduction
Water management and flood preparedness are important challenges for communities affected by heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and changing environmental conditions. Access to clear information can help people understand potential risks and make better-informed decisions.
I built JalSetu – AI-Powered Water Management & Flood Monitoring System as an environmental hackathon project to explore how web technologies and cloud computing can support water awareness and disaster preparedness.
The Problem
Environmental information can be difficult to access and interpret, especially when people need to understand water-related risks. A useful digital platform should make relevant information easier to explore and present it in a clear, accessible format.
JalSetu explores this problem by bringing its implemented water management and flood monitoring features together in one application.
Introducing JalSetu
JalSetu is designed to support water management awareness and flood preparedness through a web-based interface.
The project focuses on presenting relevant information in an accessible way and exploring how technology can help users understand environmental conditions.
Key capabilities demonstrated by the application include:
- An interactive interface for exploring the project's water management features.
- Visual presentation of the information supported by the implementation.
- A foundation for future enhancements such as live water-level data, location-based alerts, and environmental analytics.
These future enhancements would require suitable data sources and additional implementation before they could be considered live monitoring features.
Technology Stack
JalSetu was developed using modern web development tools and cloud technologies. The frontend provides the user interface, while the configured backend and cloud services support the functionality that has been implemented.
Technologies used: [Insert your actual frontend framework, backend, database, and AWS services.]
How AWS Fits Into JalSetu
AWS offers cloud services that developers can use to deploy applications and build scalable solutions.
In JalSetu, I used [insert the AWS service you actually implemented] for [describe the specific task it performs in your application].
For example, if AWS Amplify was used, explain how it hosts or deploys the frontend. If Amazon Bedrock was integrated, describe the actual AI functionality it powers. Mention Amazon Cognito only if user authentication was implemented through it.
This project helped me understand how cloud services can support the development and deployment of an environmental application.
Challenges and Learning
Building JalSetu gave me practical experience in turning an idea into a working application. It also helped me understand the importance of testing application functionality, configuring deployment settings correctly, and documenting the technologies used.
One of the main lessons was that a useful environmental solution needs more than an attractive interface. Reliable data sources, meaningful visualizations, clear communication, and careful testing are also important.
Future Scope
JalSetu could be extended with verified live water-level data, rainfall information, location-based alerts, historical trend analysis, and AI-assisted summaries where appropriate data and services are available.
These improvements could make the platform more useful for communities and disaster management teams.
Conclusion
JalSetu was an opportunity to explore how software development and cloud computing can contribute to environmental awareness and disaster preparedness. Through this project, I gained experience building an application and learned how to identify opportunities for future improvements.
I hope to continue developing JalSetu into a more data-driven and useful platform for water management and flood preparedness.
