Hyper-Local Air Quality & Safe Route Planner

EcoRoute is a smart route-planning platform that helps commuters, students, cyclists, and pedestrians choose routes with potentially lower pollution exposure. It aims to combine air-quality data, pollution hotspots, distance, and travel time to compare travel options. The initial prototype uses clearly labelled sample data, with real-time air-quality and routing integrations planned for future development. EcoRoute promotes informed travel decisions and eco-friendly mobility.

EcoRoute — Hyper-Local Air Quality & Safe Route Planner

EcoRoute is a smart route-planning platform designed to help commuters, students, cyclists, and pedestrians make informed travel decisions by considering air pollution alongside distance and travel time. It aims to combine air-quality information, pollution hotspots, and route comparisons to encourage healthier and more environmentally friendly mobility.

The Problem

Traditional navigation applications mainly focus on finding the fastest or shortest route. They may not provide sufficient street-level air-quality information to help travellers understand pollution exposure. EcoRoute aims to address this gap by making environmental information easier to understand and use.

Our Solution

EcoRoute provides a user-friendly dashboard concept featuring air-quality indicators, PM2.5 information, pollution hotspots, and alternative route comparisons. Users can enter their starting point and destination to explore route options based on distance, estimated travel time, and illustrative pollution exposure scores.

Technology Used

The initial prototype was developed using AWS PartyRock. A coded web application is being developed using React, TypeScript, and CSS, with GitHub planned for source-code management. Future development will focus on integrating reliable air-quality data, real routing services, and suitable AWS backend services.

Future Scope

EcoRoute aims to promote sustainable transportation by helping people consider environmental conditions when planning journeys. Future improvements may include live air-quality monitoring, pollution hotspot mapping, and more accurate pollution-aware route recommendations.
Current status: The prototype uses clearly labelled sample data. Real-time air-quality and routing integrations are planned and have not yet been implemented.

Conclusion

EcoRoute envisions a future where people choose routes based not only on how quickly they can reach their destinations, but also on the environmental conditions they may encounter along the way.
