My First Step into AWS Cloud
Starting my AWS Cloud Practitioner journey and connecting my networking knowledge with cloud infrastructure.
Taking My First Steps into AWS ☁️
Starting something new is always exciting, especially when it connects with something you already enjoy.
I was really glad to receive access to the AWS Skill Builder Student Annual Subscription. Having access to the learning resources for a full year gave me the motivation to finally start my AWS Cloud Practitioner learning journey and take my first serious steps into cloud computing.
My first session focused on AWS Cloud Basics, and it was a great introduction to how AWS and cloud computing work.
Connecting Networking to the Cloud
One of the things that stood out to me most was realizing that cloud computing isn't completely separate from the networking concepts I've already been learning.
When we talk about the cloud, it's easy as a beginner to imagine that everything is simply happening somewhere on the internet. But behind those cloud services are still physical servers, data centers, networks, storage, and computing resources.
The difference is that platforms like AWS make these resources available to us through cloud services, allowing us to provision and manage them without having to own the physical infrastructure ourselves.
That connection made the transition from networking to cloud feel much more natural to me.
What I Learned
During the session, I was introduced to several important AWS concepts and tools, including:
- AWS Global Infrastructure and how AWS organizes its infrastructure around the world.
- The AWS Management Console, which provides a graphical interface for interacting with AWS services.
- The AWS Pricing Calculator, which can be used to estimate the potential cost of AWS resources before deploying them.
- Connecting to and interacting with AWS services.
- The fundamentals of deploying a static website.
I particularly enjoyed the practical side of the session. Instead of simply going through definitions, I was able to start seeing how the concepts relate to things that can actually be built and deployed.
What I'm Taking Away
My biggest takeaway from this first session is that learning cloud computing isn't about trying to understand everything at once.
It's about building a strong foundation and gradually connecting the pieces.
As someone with a Computer Engineering and networking background, I'm looking forward to understanding how concepts such as networks, IP addresses, subnets, servers, security, and infrastructure come together within AWS.
I'm still very much at the beginning of this journey, but that's what makes it exciting.
I want to learn by building, experimenting, making mistakes, troubleshooting, and trying again rather than just memorizing concepts.
A big appreciation to Deborah Williams for making the session clear, practical, and beginner-friendly. It was a great way to begin my AWS learning journey.
What's Next?
This is only the beginning.
My goal is to continue working through the Cloud Practitioner learning path while getting more hands-on with AWS services. Along the way, I hope to document what I learn, build small projects, and gradually develop the skills needed to work confidently with cloud and networking technologies.
For now, I'm taking it one concept at a time.
Learning. Building. Connecting the dots. ☁️🚀
