VizagSafeAI: Building a Safety-First AI Agent for Students and Travellers
Introduction
When exploring a new city, travelling to unfamiliar places, or dealing with unexpected situations, knowing what to do next can make a meaningful difference. Students, tourists, and residents often need quick access to understandable safety guidance without navigating lengthy articles or complicated instructions.
That inspired me to develop VizagSafeAI, an AI-powered local safety assistant designed around a simple principle: help people understand their next safe action.
The project focuses on Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, a coastal city that attracts tourists and has a large student population. VizagSafeAI aims to make safety information more accessible through an approachable conversational interface that prioritizes clarity, practical guidance, and responsible AI.
What and Who: Meet VizagSafeAI
VizagSafeAI is designed for students, tourists, solo travellers, and residents seeking practical safety guidance.
Users can ask questions about beach safety, weather preparedness, travelling in unfamiliar areas, and responding to unexpected situations. The agent is designed to provide clear instructions, explain relevant precautions, and direct users towards appropriate emergency resources when necessary.
For example, a tourist visiting RK Beach might ask, "The waves look unusually strong. What precautions should I take?"
Instead of returning a lengthy general article, VizagSafeAI prioritizes immediate safety actions, explains what to avoid, and encourages users to follow instructions from local authorities.
The objective is not to replace emergency services or professional assistance. Rather, the agent helps people understand general safety precautions and identify appropriate next steps.
By focusing on a specific location and audience, VizagSafeAI explores how conversational AI can make everyday safety information easier to understand and use.
How I Built It
I designed VizagSafeAI around a serverless architecture using AWS services and modern web development tools.
The frontend uses React and Vite to provide an interactive, mobile-friendly interface. Users can enter questions, select suggested safety topics, and receive responses in a conversational format.
AWS Lambda serves as the backend execution environment, processing incoming requests and connecting the application to the AI model. Amazon API Gateway provides the API endpoint through which the frontend communicates with the backend. Amazon Bedrock generates contextual responses.
The application separates the user interface from the AI-processing logic. This separation makes the system easier to maintain and provides flexibility for future improvements.
Technology Stack
- React and Vite: Building the interactive frontend.
- Amazon API Gateway: Handling communication between the frontend and backend.
- AWS Lambda: Processing requests and executing backend logic.
- Amazon Bedrock: Generating AI-powered safety guidance.
- GitHub: Managing and sharing the source code.

The implementation focuses on a straightforward architecture that can support a useful initial product without introducing unnecessary complexity.
The Delightful Detail: Safety-First Responses
The most important user-experience decision in VizagSafeAI is its Safety-First Response format.
AI-generated answers can sometimes overwhelm users with too much information, particularly when they need straightforward guidance. To address this challenge, I designed the agent's response format around four elements:
1. Your next step: The most important immediate action.
2. What to do: Clear, practical instructions.
3. Stay alert: Relevant risks and precautions.
4. Get help: Appropriate emergency resources when necessary.
2. What to do: Clear, practical instructions.
3. Stay alert: Relevant risks and precautions.
4. Get help: Appropriate emergency resources when necessary.
This approach aims to make responses easier to scan, understand, and act upon.
Consider a person asking about unexpectedly strong waves at a beach. The agent should prioritize staying out of dangerous water, moving away from hazardous surf, and following instructions from local authorities. The user receives practical guidance instead of an unnecessarily long explanation.
Another important design consideration is handling uncertainty responsibly. The agent should not claim to know current weather conditions, sea conditions, or local incidents unless reliable, current information is available.
An AI agent's quality depends not only on the information it generates but also on how effectively it communicates that information to people.
To evaluate this feature, I tested [insert the number of scenarios you actually tested], including ordinary safety questions, urgent situations, ambiguous requests, and questions outside the agent's intended scope.
Testing results: [Insert your actual findings, including what worked and what you improved.]
These tests help assess whether responses are clear, actionable, appropriately cautious, and consistent with the intended response format.
Proof It Works
The project demonstration allows readers to explore VizagSafeAI and understand how it responds to safety-related questions.
- Live demonstration: [Insert your deployed application URL]
- GitHub repository: [Insert your public GitHub repository URL]
- Screenshots or demonstration video: Include a screenshot or link showing a real interaction with the working agent.

The demonstration should show a user submitting a safety-related question and receiving a structured response through the application interface.
Lessons Learned and What's Next
Developing VizagSafeAI reinforces an important principle: generating a response is only one part of creating a useful AI agent.
The presentation of information, handling of uncertainty, clarity of instructions, and overall interaction experience are equally important. A technically capable agent becomes more useful when people can understand its responses and identify their next steps without unnecessary effort.
Future improvements could include integration with verified weather information, carefully sourced local emergency resources, and location-aware guidance. These features would require reliable data sources, appropriate validation, and clear communication about the system's limitations.
I also see opportunities to improve the interface through accessibility features, better error handling, and feedback mechanisms that help identify confusing or incomplete responses.
My goal is to evolve VizagSafeAI into a practical safety-information companion that helps people feel better prepared when exploring Visakhapatnam.
Conclusion
VizagSafeAI explores how AI and AWS serverless technologies can be combined to make safety guidance more approachable.
By focusing on a specific audience, a meaningful problem, and a Safety-First Response experience, the project demonstrates an approach to AI development that places usability and responsible guidance at the centre of the design.
For me, building an agent people enjoy using means going beyond generating answers. It means making every interaction clearer, more practical, and more helpful.
