From Chaos to Clean Data: My Battle-Tested Approach to Entity Matching

A practical developer breakdown of handling messy data, text preprocessing, and entity matching during a fast-paced hackathon project.

When you start building a data-driven application, everyone talks about the fun part—training models or writing core algorithms. But reality hits the second you actually look at your raw data.
During a recent hackathon project involving text preprocessing and entity matching, my teammate and I spent more time cleaning data than writing model logic. Here is a quick look at what that process actually looked like:
  • Dealing with Real-World Inconsistencies: Real datasets are messy. Names, formats, and identifiers across different records rarely match up cleanly. Before any matching algorithm could work, we had to build robust text preprocessing scripts to handle lowercase conversions, strip whitespace, and normalize strings.
  • Building Matching Logic: Instead of relying on exact string matches (which fail constantly due to typos or formatting gaps), we had to implement fuzzy matching and token-based similarity metrics to group related entities correctly.
  • Iterating on Pipeline Speed: Processing thousands of rows locally taught us quick lessons about efficiency. Small changes to how we structured our dataframes and text cleaning loops drastically cut down runtime.
Writing clean scripts to turn chaotic raw text into structured data is unglamorous, but it is the backbone of any real data engineering task.
For other developers tackling hackathons or data projects: what is your go-to strategy or library for cleaning up messy string data?
