Stop Collecting Certifications. Start Building Proof.
Many learners trying to break into DevOps do the same thing: they pile up certifications and wait for job offers. Then the rejections come, and they wonder what went wrong.
Certs show you can pass an exam. DevOps hiring managers want to know whether you can ship, automate, and fix things when they break. A multiple-choice test can't prove that.
Why certs alone fall short
DevOps is a practice, not a body of trivia. Teams hire people who can reduce deployment pain, automate repetitive work, and keep systems reliable. A certificate says you studied. A working pipeline says you can do the job.
What to do instead
  1. Build a real CI/CD pipeline. Take a simple app and automate its build, test, and deployment using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins. Make it break, then fix it.
  2. Use Infrastructure as Code. Provision your environment with Terraform or Ansible instead of clicking through a console. Anyone should be able to rebuild your setup from your repo.
  3. Containerize and orchestrate. Package your app with Docker, then deploy it on Kubernetes. Even a small cluster teaches more than weeks of video lectures.
  4. Add monitoring and logging. Set up Prometheus and Grafana, or a similar stack. Show that you understand what happens after deployment.
  5. Build security into it. Add image scanning, secrets management, and dependency checks. This is DevSecOps, and it sets you apart.
  6. Document everything publicly. Put your projects on GitHub with clear READMEs, architecture diagrams, and lessons learned. Write about what went wrong. Employers love seeing how you troubleshoot.
    Where certs fit
Certifications aren't useless. A cert can help your CV pass an HR filter, and it gives your learning some structure. Just treat it as support for your portfolio, not a substitute for one. Cert plus projects beats cert alone every time.
    The bottom line
If you have limited time and money, spend them on building. Three solid, well-documented projects will do more for your job search than five certificates. Show what you can do, and let the work speak.
