From Alerts to Action :how a SOC ANALYST approaches threat detection in AWS
A practical perspective on modern SOC operations, leveraging AWS CloudTrail , GuardDuty, and Security Hub for effective threat detection and incident response.
As a SOC Analyst based in Lagos, my day revolves around one core question: how do we detect threats faster than they can cause harm?
Security Operations is no longer just about monitoring alerts. It's about understanding the context behind every log, every network flow, and every identity action.
My Core Stack for Cloud Security:
1. Visibility is Everything: AWS CloudTrail
In the cloud, you can't protect what you can't see. CloudTrail gives me the audit trail I need - who did what, when, and from where. For any SOC analyst moving to cloud, start here. It's your primary source of truth for incident investigation.

2. Intelligent Detection: Amazon GuardDuty
Manual log review doesn't scale. GuardDuty has changed how I approach threat detection by using ML to surface anomalies like unusual API calls, credential exfiltration, and EC2 compromise. It reduces noise and lets analysts focus on real incidents.

3. Centralized Response: Security Hub & Networking
Security Hub helps correlate findings, while understanding VPC Flow Logs and Network Firewall is critical for containing threats at the network layer.

Key Lesson for Aspiring SOC Analysts:
Technical skills in networking, Linux, and cloud fundamentals are non-negotiable. But equally important is curiosity - always asking "is this normal?"

I am currently building my skills in AWS Security, Identity, & Compliance to bridge traditional SOC operations with cloud-native security.
Let's connect if you are also in Security Operations or Cloud Security.
