Weekend Challenge : Book-Bite Agent
Book-Bite cuts through daily friction with zero-fluff, 1-minute tactical advice distilled directly from the world’s best thinkers.
Whether you are trying to master a challenging new skill, manage daily work deliverables, or kickstart an ambitious personal project, everyone eventually runs straight into a wall of cognitive overload. Modern life presents us with endless information, tools, and decisions. When confronted with big tasks and high expectations, it is easy to fall into analysis paralysis. We spend hours reading guides, organizing checklists, and waiting for motivation to strike, rather than taking meaningful action.
To solve this universal friction for the AWS Build an Agent Weekend Challenge, I built Book-Bite—a serverless AI application designed to snap you out of your productivity rut with targeted, bite-sized philosophy.
What Your Agent Does
Book-Bite is an interactive philosophy and self-help action agent designed for everyday learners, busy professionals, students, and makers who want rapid, practical guidance. Instead of functioning like a typical conversational chatbot that offers polite, drawn-out paragraphs, Book-Bite delivers a zero-fluff, highly actionable 1-minute read tailored to the user's specific problem.
Users select an advisor from a curated collection of world-class authors and thinkers—such as James Clear (Atomic Habits), Mark Manson (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck*), Robert Greene (The 48 Laws of Power), Darius Foroux (Do It Today), or a generalized Best Practices coach.
After selecting their preferred mentor, the user inputs their immediate real-world challenge—such as avoiding an intimidating project, struggling with perfectionism, or scrolling on social media instead of working. In response, Book-Bite generates an immediate, structured action plan adopting the exact philosophy, tone, and frameworks of that selected author. The advice focuses entirely on concrete steps that can be started within five minutes, empowering the user to close the tab and return to work.
How You Built It
To keep the application fast, reliable, and completely free of server maintenance, I engineered the entire solution on an AWS serverless architecture utilizing AWS Free Tier resources.
1. The Intelligence Layer: Amazon Bedrock
At the center of Book-Bite is Amazon Bedrock, using the Anthropic Claude 4.5 Haiku model (
us.anthropic.claude-haiku-4-5-20251001-v1:0). I deliberately chose Claude 4.5 Haiku because Book-Bite promises a rapid, 1-minute read; low latency and quick turnaround times are essential for maintaining user focus. Through targeted system prompts, the model is dynamically instructed to step into the author's mindset and deliver concise, numbered action steps while avoiding introductions or polite filler phrases.2. The Compute Engine: AWS Lambda
A Python runtime function on AWS Lambda acts as the core processing engine. The function parses the user's problem statement and selected mentor from the incoming JSON payload, dynamically generates the persona-driven system prompt, and makes the model call via the AWS SDK for Python (
boto3).3. The API Layer: Amazon API Gateway
To bridge the frontend and backend, an Amazon API Gateway REST API was configured. The API accepts HTTPS requests from the web interface, forwards them to the Lambda function, and routes the generated text back to the client. Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) was explicitly configured on the API Gateway methods (
OPTIONS and POST) to allow seamless communication from the browser.4. The Presentation Layer: Amazon S3
The frontend is hosted as a static website on Amazon S3. I designed a sleek, distraction-free "Glassmorphism" interface using HTML5, modern CSS, and vanilla JavaScript. To make sure the generated output is clear and easy to read, I integrated the lightweight Marked.js library to parse Claude's raw Markdown into structured typography, clean lists, and bold action headers.
Key Decisions and Challenges Overcome
One key challenge during development was preventing the AI model from adding conversational introductions (such as "Hello, as James Clear, I suggest..."). Because Book-Bite aims to save time, every introductory word wastes attention. I resolved this through strict negative prompting constraints in the system prompt, enforcing that the model begin immediately with tactical advice. Another hurdle was handling cross-origin requests; properly configuring the CORS headers inside both the API Gateway setup and the Lambda response dictionary ensured zero request failures across different browsers.
The Experience
The blank text box is often the biggest point of friction in generative AI applications. When people feel overwhelmed or unfocused, asking them to describe their problem from scratch can cause them to abandon the tool before seeing any value.
The standout feature created to make Book-Bite an enjoyable, effortless experience is the implementation of Quick-Fill Suggestion Chips.
Positioned directly above the input box, these interactive pill buttons represent common struggles that almost everyone encounters:
- ⏳ Procrastination: Avoiding work by doing minor chores.
- 🤯 Tech & Information Overwhelm: Paralyzed by too many options and choices.
- 🎯 Perfectionism: Spending excessive time polishing small details rather than finishing.
- 🔋 Low Motivation: Waiting for the "right mood" before beginning.
Clicking any chip instantly fills the input field with an authentic problem description. Users can test different philosophical viewpoints—such as comparing James Clear's habit friction models to Mark Manson's direct reality checks—in seconds without having to type. The presence of subtle loading animations, glowing focus states, and clean card typography reinforces an inviting and modern experience.
