AWS Auto Scaling: Building Applications That Handle Changing Traffic
Introduction
Cloud applications may receive different amounts of traffic at different times. An application might have low traffic during normal hours and suddenly receive thousands of requests during peak periods.
AWS Auto Scaling helps applications automatically adjust their resources according to demand.
What is Auto Scaling?
Auto Scaling is a feature that automatically increases or decreases the number of running resources based on defined conditions.
For example:
Low Traffic
↓
Fewer EC2 Instances
↓
High Traffic
↓
More EC2 Instances
This helps maintain application performance while avoiding unnecessary resource usage.
Auto Scaling Group
An Auto Scaling Group (ASG) manages a collection of EC2 instances.
Important settings include:
  • Minimum capacity – Minimum number of instances to maintain.
  • Desired capacity – Normal number of instances.
  • Maximum capacity – Maximum number of instances that can run.
Example:
Minimum: 2
Desired: 2
Maximum: 5
If traffic increases, the ASG can launch additional EC2 instances, up to the maximum capacity.
Launch Template
A Launch Template defines how new EC2 instances should be created.
It can specify:
  • AMI
  • Instance type
  • Key pair
  • Security group
  • Storage
  • IAM role
  • User data
When Auto Scaling needs a new instance, it uses the launch template to create it with the required configuration.
Types of Scaling
  1. Dynamic Scaling
Resources are adjusted automatically based on changing conditions.
Example:
CPU Utilization > 70%
↓
Launch new EC2 instance
  1. Scheduled Scaling
Scaling happens at a predefined time.
For example, an application could increase capacity before expected business-hour traffic.
  1. Static Capacity
A fixed number of instances is maintained regardless of traffic changes.
Auto Scaling with Load Balancer
Auto Scaling can work together with a load balancer.

Auto Scaling
Group
The load balancer distributes incoming traffic across healthy EC2 instances.
If traffic increases, Auto Scaling can launch more instances, and the load balancer can distribute traffic to them.
Benefits
  • Automatically handles changing traffic
  • Improves application availability
  • Reduces manual management
  • Helps maintain performance
  • Can reduce unnecessary resource usage
  • Works well with load balancing
Real-World Example
Consider an online shopping website.
During normal hours:
2 EC2 Instances
During a major sale:
Traffic increases
↓
Auto Scaling detects demand
↓
Additional EC2 instances launch
↓
Load Balancer distributes traffic
After traffic decreases, unnecessary instances can be terminated according to the scaling policy.
Conclusion
AWS Auto Scaling is an important service for building scalable and highly available applications. When combined with EC2 and a Load Balancer, it provides a flexible architecture that can respond to changing traffic automatically.
Learning Auto Scaling through hands-on AWS labs is a great way to understand how cloud infrastructure handles real-world workloads.
