Building an Intelligent System on AWS: An AI Assistant That Understands, Searches, and Acts
The Idea Companies hold thousands of documents (contracts, invoices, procedures, tickets) that nobody has time to read. This project builds an intelligent system that: understands documents and natural-language requests, retrieves the right information from the company's knowledge base, acts: creates a ticket, queries a database, sends a summary. The goal is to move from a simple chatbot to a reliable, secure assistant connected to business data, using managed AWS services.
The Problem
A generic chatbot sometimes invents answers (hallucinations), knows nothing about internal data, and can do nothing beyond replying. For professional use, the model needs to be grounded in trusted sources, its answers need to be controlled, and it needs tools to take action.
The Approach
The system relies on three building blocks:
- Perception: extract and understand content (text, PDFs, voice, images).
- Reasoning: a foundation model, enriched by document retrieval (RAG).
- Action: an agent that calls APIs and services to complete tasks.
The AWS Toolbox
| Layer | Services | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Models | Amazon Bedrock | Access to foundation models (including Claude and Amazon Nova) through a single API |
| Knowledge (RAG) | Bedrock Knowledge Bases, Amazon OpenSearch Serverless, Amazon S3 | Index documents and give the model the relevant context |
| Agents | Bedrock Agents (or Bedrock AgentCore), AWS Lambda | Orchestrate reasoning and call tools |
| Document understanding | Amazon Textract, Amazon Comprehend | Extract text, tables, entities, and sentiment |
| Voice and conversation | Amazon Transcribe, Amazon Polly, Amazon Lex | Talk to the assistant and hear it respond |
| Vision | Amazon Rekognition | Analyze images and video |
| Guardrails | Bedrock Guardrails | Filter sensitive content, mask personal data, restrict topics |
| Application | API Gateway, Amazon Cognito, DynamoDB | Expose the assistant, authenticate users, store history |
| Operations | IAM, CloudWatch, AWS Budgets | Security, observability, cost control |

Textract / Comprehend (document ingestion)What Makes the Difference
- RAG instead of retraining: knowledge is updated by adding documents to S3, without touching the model.
- Sourced answers: the assistant cites the documents it used, which lets users verify answers and builds trust.
- Guardrails from day one: personal data masking and topic restrictions are set up before production, not after.
- Agents with limited permissions: each tool has a least-privilege IAM role, and sensitive actions can require human approval.
- Model choice by need: a lightweight model for simple tasks, a more powerful one for complex reasoning, to optimize cost and latency.
Use Cases
- Customer support: answers based on product documentation
- HR or legal assistant: search across internal policies and contracts
- Intelligent document processing: invoices, forms, supporting documents
- Call analytics: transcription, summarization, and sentiment detection
Points of Caution
- Data quality: a RAG system is only as good as the documents it indexes.
- Continuous evaluation: test answers against a reference set of questions.
- Costs: monitor token consumption and index size.
- Responsible AI: transparency, privacy, and human oversight.
Next Steps
- Multi-agent systems where specialized agents collaborate
- Automated answer evaluation, with prompt tuning
- Integration with internal tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP)
- Model customization when the use case justifies it
