A Beginner’s AWS Learning Routine: Learn One Concept, Then Try It
I’m new to AWS and working toward a certification. I’m focusing on one topic at a time. I start with a question, such as what problem a cloud service solves, then use a learning resource to explain the idea in my own words. When possible, I try a guided exercise and note what resources it creates and how to clean them up. At the end, I record what I learned, one example, and a question I have. This routine helps me connect study with practice. What AWS topic first made sense to you after trying it hands-on?
I’m new to AWS and working toward a certification. There are many services and concepts to learn, so I’m trying to make steady progress by focusing on one topic at a time.
Here’s the routine I’m using:
1. Start with one clear question
Rather than trying to learn everything at once, I choose one question for a study session. For example:
- What problem does cloud object storage solve?
- What does identity and access management help control?
- When might someone use a virtual server?
A focused question gives me a reason to learn the topic and helps me notice when I understand it.
2. Learn the idea in plain language
I use a learning resource or documentation, then try to explain the idea in my own words. If I can’t explain it simply yet, I go back and review the part that confused me.
I also note any AWS service names connected to the topic, along with the problem each service helps address.
3. Connect it to an example
When possible, I follow a beginner-friendly, guided exercise. Before starting, I check what resources the exercise will create and how to clean them up afterward. If I can’t do a hands-on exercise, I draw a small diagram or write down how I think the pieces fit together.
4. Keep a short learning note
At the end of a session, I write down three things:
- The concept I studied
- One example that helped it make sense
- One question I still have
This gives me a simple way to review later and helps me ask more specific questions when I need help.
I’ve also started using AWS Builder Center to read articles, join discussions, and share ideas as I learn. I’m still at the beginning of the journey, but this small routine is helping me turn studying into steady progress.
What was the first AWS concept that became clearer to you after seeing a practical example? I’d be glad to learn from your suggestions.
