Getting Started with System Design? Start Here
System design can feel like a lot when you’re first getting started.
You are thinking about the problem, the users, traffic, databases, APIs, scalability, security, and which technology to use. It can be hard to know where to start building.
A better method is to work backwards from the problem itself.
In this AWS Developers video, a classic system design problem, building a URL shortener, gets broken down step by step. It covers what the system needs to do, how to think about scale, and how to choose technology based on the requirements.
What Will You Learn?
The video walks through a system design problem from the beginning: understanding the requirements, thinking about traffic, mapping out the main parts of the system, defining APIs, and then choosing a tech stack. It also shows how the design maps to AWS services.
There isn't always one right way to build a system. Different choices can make sense depending on what you're trying to solve, which is why it's important to understand the trade-offs behind each decision.
System Design Gets Easier with Practice
Don't expect to design the perfect architecture on your first try.
The more system design problems you work through, the easier it gets to spot patterns and see how the pieces fit together. The video uses a URL shortener, but the same approach works for other examples like chat apps, booking systems, news feeds, or streaming platforms.
You don't need to memorize one answer. What matters more is understanding the problem and being able to explain the choices you make and why you made them.
Watch the AWS Developers video below to see the full example.
As you watch, what are your key takeaways? How would you use these principles in your next architecture design?
