How I passed GitHub Foundations (GH-900) in one week.

Last Sunday I passed the GitHub Foundations certification 🎉. I prepared in one week alongside my other learning, so I want to share the exact plan. If you're a student thinking about your first certification, this one is a great place to start.

Code
About the exam* Code: GH-900, booked through Microsoft Learn and taken online with Pearson VUE (OnVUE)
  • Format: multiple-choice, closed-book, 100 minutes. Some questions are unscored pretest items, but you can't tell which, so answer everything.
  • Domains: Git & GitHub basics carries the most weight (25–30%), followed by repositories, collaboration, modern development (Actions, Copilot, Codespaces), security and administration, Projects, and the GitHub community. What helped most1. Clicking through GitHub Settings instead of only reading. Many questions are about features you only see inside repository or organization settings.
  1. Knowing the layers: personal account → repository → organization → enterprise. Many questions come down to which level a feature belongs to.
  2. Comparison tables for similar features: Dependabot vs secret scanning vs code scanning, forks vs branches, issues vs Discussions.
  3. Writing at least one Actions workflow myself. Knowing what on, jobs, runs-on, steps, uses and secrets do made those questions easy.
  4. Taking the free official practice assessment twice, and studying every wrong answer between attempts.Exam-day tips for online (OnVUE) exams* Run the Pearson VUE system test a day early, on the same laptop and Wi-Fi.
  • Start check-in 30 minutes early. You take photos of your face, your ID and your room with your phone, then put the phone out of reach.
  • The name on your registration must exactly match your ID.
  • Close everything else on your laptop: browsers, chat apps, VPN.After passingThe certificate appears in your Microsoft Learn profile under Credentials, with a credential ID and a shareable verification link. It's valid for two years. What's nextThis week I started the DataCamp AI Engineer for Developers track: the OpenAI API and prompt engineering so far, with LangChain, embeddings and MCP coming up. I'll write about what I learn next Wednesday.Question for you: What was your first certification, and would you recommend it to a fresher? I'm planning my next ones and would love suggestions 👇#github #certification #gh900 #students #learning-in-public
