AWS Services every computer science students must know!!

Cloud computing may feel overwhelming at first, but Computer Science students can begin with five essential AWS services: EC2, S3, IAM, RDS, and Lambda. EC2 runs applications, S3 stores files, IAM manages access, RDS supports databases, and Lambda runs code without managing servers. Learning these services builds a strong foundation for cloud development, internships, and practical projects. #AWS #CloudComputing #AWSBuilder

5 AWS Services Every Computer Science Student Should Learn

Cloud computing has become one of the most important skills for software developers, system administrators, data engineers, and DevOps professionals. Among the various cloud platforms available today, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the most widely used by startups, enterprises, and government organizations.
As a Computer Science student, I initially found AWS overwhelming because of the large number of services available. However, after exploring the platform, I realized that learning a few core services provides a strong foundation for understanding cloud computing.
In this article, I will discuss five AWS services that every Computer Science student should learn and why they are important.

1. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud)

Amazon EC2 allows users to create and manage virtual servers in the cloud. Instead of purchasing physical hardware, developers can launch servers whenever they need them.

Why learn EC2?

  • Host web applications
  • Deploy Java, Python, Node.js, and Spring Boot projects
  • Practice Linux administration
  • Understand cloud infrastructure

Real-world example

Suppose you have developed a Spring Boot application for a college project. Instead of running it only on your local computer, you can deploy it on an EC2 instance and access it from anywhere.

2. Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

Amazon S3 is an object storage service used to store files such as images, videos, documents, backups, and application assets.

Why learn S3?

  • Store project files securely
  • Host static websites
  • Create backups
  • Learn cloud storage concepts

Real-world example

A student portfolio website built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript can be hosted directly on S3 without maintaining a server.

3. AWS IAM (Identity and Access Management)

IAM is used to control who can access AWS resources and what actions they are allowed to perform.

Why learn IAM?

  • Improve security
  • Manage users and permissions
  • Understand authentication and authorization
  • Follow cloud security best practices

Real-world example

In an organization, developers may need access to EC2 but not billing information. IAM allows administrators to grant only the required permissions.

4. Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service)

Amazon RDS makes it easier to run relational databases in the cloud without manually managing servers.

Why learn RDS?

  • Work with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other databases
  • Reduce database administration tasks
  • Learn cloud-based data management
  • Build scalable applications

Real-world example

A Transaction Processing System (TPS) can use MySQL on Amazon RDS to store customer, inventory, and sales information securely.

5. AWS Lambda

AWS Lambda is a serverless computing service that allows developers to run code without managing servers.

Why learn Lambda?

  • Pay only when code executes
  • Build event-driven applications
  • Reduce infrastructure management
  • Learn modern cloud architecture

Real-world example

Whenever a file is uploaded to an S3 bucket, a Lambda function can automatically process the file and generate notifications.

How These Services Work Together

A simple cloud application may use:
  • EC2 for running the backend application
  • S3 for storing files
  • IAM for security
  • RDS for storing data
  • Lambda for automation
Understanding how these services interact provides a strong foundation for more advanced AWS concepts.
Quick Quiz: Which AWS service would you use to host a static HTML/CSS portfolio website without managing a server?
A) EC2
B) S3
C) RDS
D) IAM
