AWS and OpenAI introduce Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, enabling developers to build AI agents using OpenAI models with AWS-native security and governance.
Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents: Building AI Agents with OpenAI
AWS and OpenAI have introduced Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, currently available in preview.
The service is designed to make it easier for developers to build AI agents powered by OpenAI models while keeping the agents inside AWS infrastructure.
What are Managed Agents?
AI agents can do more than simply generate text. They can maintain state, use tools, execute tasks, and coordinate multiple steps.
Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents helps manage these capabilities.
Agents can:
- Maintain conversation and task state
- Select and use tools
- Execute code
- Coordinate multi-step tasks
- Connect to reusable skills
- Work with MCP servers
AWS-native security
Each agent operates with its own AWS IAM role.
The service also supports:
- IAM permissions
- Human approval for consequential actions
- AWS CloudTrail activity logging
- Durable sessions
- AWS resource integration
This gives developers more control over how AI agents interact with cloud resources.
Durable agent sessions
One useful capability is persistent state.
Instead of starting from zero every time, an agent can retain messages, tool calls, and intermediate results so a task can continue later.
This can be useful for long-running workflows and complex applications.
Why developers should care
AI agents are becoming an important part of modern software development.
By combining OpenAI models with AWS infrastructure, Bedrock Managed Agents gives developers another way to build production-oriented agentic applications while using AWS identity, permissions, governance, and monitoring capabilities.
Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents is currently available in preview in selected AWS Regions.
