My Learning Journey: Protecting Data in Cloud Applications

This article shares the key lessons I learned about protecting application data in AWS, including data encryption, access control, and secure data storage.

A research student in School of Computing
Protecting data in AWS requires proper access control, encryption, monitoring, and secure configuration. This module explores how to protect sensitive information in Amazon S3, manage permissions, and use encryption to maintain data confidentiality and integrity.

Amazon S3 Access Control

Amazon S3 provides several ways to control access to buckets and objects:
  • IAM policies: Define what AWS users and roles can do with S3 resources.
  • Bucket policies: Specify which users or services can access a bucket and what actions they can perform.
  • Access Control Lists (ACLs): Provide a legacy mechanism for granting specific access to buckets and objects.
  • S3 Block Public Access: Helps prevent public access to S3 resources through public policies or ACLs.
The principle of least privilege should always be applied, granting users and applications only the permissions they need.

Protecting Data with Encryption

Encryption helps protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.
  • Encryption at rest: Protects stored data, such as S3 objects, using server-side encryption with Amazon S3-managed keys or AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS).
  • Encryption in transit: Uses HTTPS/TLS to protect data while it moves between applications and services.
  • AWS KMS: Creates and manages encryption keys used to protect data across AWS services.
Amazon S3 supports server-side encryption, while bucket policies can help enforce secure HTTPS connections.

Managing Certificates and Secrets

AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) helps provision, manage, and deploy SSL/TLS certificates for secure communication. For private certificate requirements, AWS Private Certificate Authority (AWS Private CA) can issue certificates for internal applications and services.
AWS Secrets Manager helps securely store, retrieve, rotate, and manage sensitive information such as database credentials and API keys. AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store can also store configuration data and secrets.

Monitoring and Protecting Sensitive Data

Amazon Macie helps discover and identify sensitive data in Amazon S3 using machine learning and pattern matching. It can help detect potential exposure of sensitive information and support data security monitoring.
S3 versioning and other protective controls can also help preserve previous object versions and reduce the risk of accidental data loss.
Protecting application data involves controlling access, encrypting data, securing connections, managing certificates and secrets, and monitoring sensitive information. Combining these AWS services and security practices helps safeguard data against unauthorized access, exposure, and loss.
