I'm a security student. Here are the 5 questions I ask before fixing any AWS Security Hub finding
A beginner-friendly checklist of five simple questions that help you understand, prioritize and safely fix any AWS Security Hub finding, instead of trying to fix everything at once.
Open Security Hub for the first time and you will probably see a long list of red and orange findings. As a security student, my first instinct was to start at the top and fix everything. That turned out to be the wrong approach.
What helped me was slowing down and asking the same five questions about every finding. I hope they help you too.
1. What exactly is exposed?
Before anything else, look at the affected resource. Is it a storage bucket, a server, an IAM role? A finding is only as scary as the thing it points to. A public bucket full of test files is very different from one holding customer data.
2. Who can reach it?
Check whether the problem is reachable from the whole internet, from other AWS accounts, or only from inside your own network. Exposure to everyone is a different level of risk than exposure to a few trusted users.
3. What happens if someone abuses it?
Think about the worst realistic outcome: leaked data, stolen credentials, a hijacked server, a surprise bill. This is the "why it matters" part, and it helps you decide what to fix first. The severity label is a useful hint, but it does not know your context.
4. Can I fix it without breaking something?
Some fixes are one click. Others can take down an application that was quietly depending on the risky setting. Check what uses the resource first, and if possible apply the change in a test environment before production.
5. How will I know it is really fixed?
Do not assume. After the change, confirm the setting is what you expect and wait for Security Hub to re-evaluate the finding. If it comes back, something is still wrong.
A simple habit
Write the five answers down, even in one line each. After a few findings you will notice patterns, and the list stops feeling endless.
One wish for beginners
While learning, I noticed that findings often explain what is wrong but not why it matters or how to fix it safely. I submitted a wish on Builder Center asking for plain-language explanations and ready-to-use fixes inside Security Hub findings. If you agree, a vote would mean a lot: vote on my wish
