Building an Automated Notification System Using AWS

Learn how to build an automated notification system using AWS services such as Amazon SNS, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudWatch, and Amazon EventBridge to send notifications automatically when events occur.

Building an Automated Notification System Using AWS

Introduction

Notifications are an important part of modern applications. They can inform users about events such as successful transactions, system errors, application updates, or important alerts.
AWS provides several services that can be combined to create an automated notification system. In this article, we will see how Amazon SNS, AWS Lambda, Amazon EventBridge, and Amazon CloudWatch can work together to send notifications automatically.

What is an Automated Notification System?

An automated notification system sends messages to users or administrators automatically when a specific event occurs.
For example, when an application detects an error, the system can automatically send a notification to the responsible person without requiring manual action.
A simple AWS notification workflow is:
Event → EventBridge / CloudWatch → AWS Lambda → Amazon SNS → User

AWS Services Used

1. Amazon EventBridge

Amazon EventBridge detects events from AWS services and applications. It can be configured with rules that determine when a particular action should occur.
For example, an event can trigger a notification when an important application activity takes place.

2. Amazon CloudWatch

Amazon CloudWatch is used to monitor AWS resources and applications. It collects logs, metrics, and events.
For example, CloudWatch can detect an application error or unusual activity and trigger a notification workflow.

3. AWS Lambda

AWS Lambda runs code automatically when it is triggered by an event.
Lambda can process the event, prepare a message, and send it to Amazon SNS. Developers do not need to manage servers for running the notification code.

4. Amazon SNS

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) is a messaging service used to send notifications to subscribers.
It can distribute messages to different endpoints, such as email or other supported notification destinations.

How the Notification System Works

The system can be implemented using the following steps:

Step 1: Generate an Event

An application or AWS service generates an event.
For example, an application may detect an error or complete an important operation.

Step 2: Detect the Event

Amazon EventBridge or CloudWatch detects the event based on the configured rules.
If the event matches the required condition, the next step of the workflow is triggered.

Step 3: Trigger AWS Lambda

The event triggers an AWS Lambda function.
Lambda processes the event and prepares an appropriate notification message.

Step 4: Send the Notification Using SNS

The Lambda function sends the message to an Amazon SNS topic.
Subscribers to the topic can then receive the notification through the configured notification channel.

Step 5: Monitor the System

Amazon CloudWatch can be used to monitor Lambda executions, logs, errors, and other application activities.
This helps developers identify problems and maintain the reliability of the notification system.

Example

Consider an online shopping application.
When a customer's order is successfully processed, an event is generated. EventBridge detects the event and triggers a Lambda function.
The Lambda function creates a message such as an order confirmation and sends it to an SNS topic. The subscribed user can then receive the notification.
The workflow is:
Order Completed → EventBridge → Lambda → SNS → User Notification

Advantages

  • Automatic Notifications: Messages are sent automatically when events occur.
  • No Server Management: AWS Lambda runs the required code without managing servers.
  • Scalable: AWS services can handle increasing numbers of events and notifications.
  • Fast Response: Notifications can be generated quickly after an event occurs.
  • Easy Monitoring: CloudWatch provides logs, metrics, and monitoring.
  • Cost Effective: Serverless services reduce the need for continuously running infrastructure.

Conclusion

An automated notification system can be built efficiently by combining AWS services such as Amazon EventBridge, AWS Lambda, Amazon SNS, and Amazon CloudWatch.
EventBridge and CloudWatch help detect events, Lambda processes the events, and SNS distributes notifications to subscribers. This creates a reliable and scalable notification system with minimal infrastructure management.
