Amazon S3 Explained: How Object Storage Works and How I Think About It as a Developer 🪣

After learning the basics of AWS IAM, the next AWS service I wanted to understand properly was Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).
S3 looks simple at first: upload a file and download it later.
But when you start thinking about real applications, S3 becomes much more interesting.
Where should files be stored?
How should they be accessed?
What happens if a file is accidentally deleted?
How can access be controlled?
How can storage costs be optimized?
These are some of the questions that helped me understand why S3 is such an important AWS service.

☁️ What is Amazon S3?

Amazon S3 is an object storage service designed to store and retrieve data from anywhere.
The data could be:
  • Images
  • Videos
  • PDFs
  • Documents
  • Backups
  • Application files
  • Logs
  • Static website assets
  • Datasets
A simple way to think about S3 is:
