AWS Management Console and CloudShell: My First Look

A beginner's first impressions of the AWS Console and CloudShell, and how they're useful before diving into CLI.

Introduction

I started the AWS Solutions Architect Associate course this week, and the first lecture covered the AWS Management Console and a brief look at CloudShell, before moving into CLI next.

What I learned about the Console

Not much new, since I already set up my account and explored the console myself earlier, but it was a good refresher on a few basics:
  • How to choose and switch between regions, and why some services are region-specific while others (like IAM) are global by default.
  • Where to find Help Center, theme settings, and other general console options.
  • A quick look at Billing and Cost Management — I'd already set up my own zero-spend budget alert earlier, so this part was familiar, but the instructor mentioned a dedicated step-by-step video on billing alerts coming up later in the course

What is CloudShell

CloudShell is a browser-based terminal built directly into the AWS Console, so you can run AWS CLI commands without installing anything locally. It's useful for quick tasks or testing commands before setting up CLI on your own machine.

Why this matters before CLI

Before jumping into installing and configuring AWS CLI on Linux, it helps to know the Console and CloudShell exist as browser-based alternatives, especially for quick checks or when CLI isn't set up yet.

What's next

Installing and configuring AWS CLI on Linux.
