How to Design Better AWS Cloud Architectures

Learn how to design AWS architectures by starting with requirements and balancing scalability, security, reliability, performance, and cost.

Cloud architecture can often seem like a matter of choosing the right AWS services.
EC2 for compute.
S3 for storage.
IAM for access control.
RDS for databases.
But knowing what a service does is only the beginning.
The more important question is:
Why should this service be used for this particular problem?
A good cloud architecture starts by understanding the requirements.
šŸ”¹ Scalability — Can the application handle increasing demand?
šŸ”¹ Availability — What happens if a component or Availability Zone fails?
šŸ”¹ Security — Who should have access, and what permissions do they actually need?
šŸ”¹ Performance — Can the architecture meet the application's performance requirements?
šŸ”¹ Cost — Are resources being used efficiently?
For example, an application serving a small number of users may require a very different architecture from one serving millions of users. The goal isn't to build the most complex system possible, but to build one that fits the workload.
This is why cloud architecture is ultimately about trade-offs and decisions, not simply knowing a list of services.
The best architecture is the one that solves the problem effectively while balancing security, reliability, scalability, performance, and cost.
Start with the problem. Understand the requirements. Then choose the services. ā˜ļø
