Getting Started with AWS Lambda: Build Your First Serverless Function in 5 Minutes
A beginner-friendly guide to understanding AWS Lambda and deploying your first serverless Python function directly from the AWS Console.
What is AWS Lambda?
AWS Lambda is an event-driven serverless compute service that executes your code without requiring server setup, maintenance, or OS patching. You focus solely on writing business logic while AWS handles provisioning, execution, and auto-scaling.
A key benefit is its cost model: you pay only for the compute time you consume, measured in milliseconds.
Why Choose Lambda?
- Zero Server Management: Write code and upload it; AWS manages infrastructure, runtime security, and patching.
- Automatic Scaling: Scales dynamically from a handful of requests a day to thousands per second.
- Cost-Effective: Includes a generous perpetual Free Tier (1 million free requests per month) before standard per-millisecond billing applies.
Step-by-Step: Creating Your First Lambda Function
1. Open the AWS Console
- Sign in to the AWS Management Console .
- In the top search bar, type Lambda and select it from the services list.
2. Create the Function
- Click Create function.
- Select Author from scratch.
- Configure the following settings:
- Function name:
hello-world-function - Runtime:
Python 3.12 - Architecture:
x86_64
- Function name:
- Leave the default execution role selected and click Create function.
3. Add and Deploy Code
In the Code source editor tab, open
lambda_function.py, replace its contents with the snippet below, and select Deploy:1
