Getting Started with Amazon EC2: My Experience with AWS Live Training

A beginner's guide to Amazon EC2 and how AWS live training by certified instructors helped me finally understand cloud compute. Covers what EC2 is, what official instructor-led courses teach, and why hands-on guidance beats reading documentation alone.

Getting Started with Amazon EC2: My Experience with AWS Live Training

Amazon EC2 was the first AWS service that genuinely intimidated me. Launching a virtual server sounded simple until I actually sat down to do it and realized I had no idea what an AMI was, why security groups mattered, or how to connect to an instance once it was running.
That is when I looked into AWS live training, and it changed how I approached the cloud entirely.

What Is Amazon EC2?

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. Instead of buying physical servers, you rent virtual machines called instances. You choose the operating system, the instance type, the storage, and the networking configuration. You pay only for what you use.
EC2 offers over 1,000 instance types optimized for different workloads, from general-purpose to compute-optimized to memory-optimized. For anyone pursuing an AWS certification, EC2 is foundational. You cannot avoid it.

Why Live Training Made the Difference

I started with documentation and videos, but something was missing. I could read about security groups, but I did not understand them until an instructor walked through a real scenario and showed what happens when you misconfigure one.
AWS live training is delivered by AWS Authorized Instructors. These are not random content creators. They are certified by AWS to teach official curriculum. The difference shows in how they answer questions and connect concepts.

What the Training Covered

The live session I attended walked through:
  • Launching an EC2 instance from the console
  • Choosing the right AMI and instance type
  • Configuring security groups and key pairs
  • Connecting via SSH
  • Monitoring with CloudWatch
  • Setting up basic Auto Scaling
The instructor paused for questions constantly and shared real-world examples of what goes wrong in production. That context is hard to get from documentation alone.

Official AWS Courses That Cover EC2

If you are looking for instructor-led training, these are the official AWS courses:
  • AWS Technical Essentials – two days, covers EC2 fundamentals and core AWS services
  • Systems Operations on AWS – three days, deeper dive into EC2 deployment, monitoring, and management
Both are delivered by AWS Authorized Instructors, either in a classroom or as virtual instructor-led training.

For University Students

If you are a student, check whether your university is part of AWS Academy. AWS Academy Cloud Foundations is an instructor-led course that covers EC2 and is taught by certified AWS Academy instructors. It is often free or included in your tuition.

My Takeaway

EC2 stopped feeling intimidating once I saw it demonstrated live and had someone to ask questions. Self-paced labs are useful for practice, but live training gave me the mental model I was missing.
If you are working toward an AWS certification, look into the official instructor-led options. The voucher from Builder Center can cover the exam, but the training is what prepares you to pass it.
