AI Agents Need a Budget Before They Act

AWS DevOps Agent can estimate investigation costs before execution. But should every autonomous AWS agent have an action budget?

Cloud & DevOps Engineer
AI agents are becoming capable of doing much more than answering questions.
They can investigate incidents, query logs and metrics, use tools, reason across multiple AWS services, and recommend or perform operational actions.
But there is another question we need to ask:
How much should an AI agent be allowed to spend while doing its job?
AWS recently introduced an Investigation Cost Guardrail for AWS DevOps Agent. It can estimate the cost of planned investigation operations before billable queries begin and make a decision to Proceed, Warn, or Halt based on the configured budget. Amazon Web Services, Inc.Ā
I think this points toward a broader idea for autonomous AI systems:

Every AI agent should have an Action Budget.

Instead of controlling only how many tokens an agent can use, imagine giving an agent limits such as:
šŸ”¹ Maximum investigation cost
šŸ”¹ Maximum number of API calls
šŸ”¹ Maximum execution time
šŸ”¹ Maximum number of retries
šŸ”¹ Maximum resources it can modify
šŸ”¹ Maximum cross-region operations
The workflow could become:
Agent plans → Estimates impact → Checks budget → Gets approval if needed → Executes → Reports actual cost
This would make autonomous agents much easier to operate in production.
Cost shouldn't be something we discover after an autonomous agent finishes its work.
It should be part of the agent's decision-making before it acts.
AWS's new cost guardrail is an interesting step toward that model. Amazon Web Services, Inc.Ā
Would you give an AI agent a fixed AWS budget and let it decide how to spend it?
