How Generative AI Is Changing the Way We Learn to Code
Generative AI is changing how students and developers learn programming and build software. In this article, I explore how AI can be used as a learning assistant while explaining why understanding, testing, and evaluating AI-generated code is still essential.
How Generative AI Is Changing the Way We Learn to Code
Artificial intelligence has become a part of everyday life, and one of the areas where I think its impact is particularly interesting is software development.
As a student learning programming, I have noticed that AI tools can be useful for much more than simply generating code. They can act as a learning assistant that helps explain difficult concepts, find mistakes, suggest improvements, and provide different approaches to solving a problem.
However, there is an important difference between using AI to write code and using AI to actually learn.
If I simply ask an AI model to solve a programming problem and copy the answer, I may finish the task quickly, but I probably will not understand much more than before. On the other hand, asking the AI to explain why a solution works, going through the code step by step, and then trying to modify it myself can turn the same interaction into a useful learning experience.
I also think generative AI makes experimentation much easier. When learning a new technology, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start. An AI assistant can help create a small example, explain the documentation, or suggest a simple project that can be used for practice.
At the same time, AI-generated code should not automatically be considered correct. Developers still need to understand what the code does, test it, look for security problems, and make sure that the solution actually fits the requirements.
This is one of the reasons I am interested in combining AI with traditional programming and cloud technologies. Tools such as AI APIs and AWS services make it possible to build applications that would have been much more difficult for a beginner to create a few years ago.
I believe the most important skill in the age of generative AI will not be memorizing every piece of code. It will be knowing how to understand problems, ask good questions, evaluate AI-generated solutions, and turn ideas into working software.
AI is changing the way we learn programming, but I don't think it replaces the need to learn programming. Instead, I see it as another tool that can help us learn faster, experiment more, and build better projects.
